THE MEETING
Tom’s blessing and Flag salute got us started.                                                                                                         *President Don back from being introduced to his and Debbie’s first granddaughter Alaina England (there were many pictures to prove same), brought us the Cultural Moment: If you wake up in the middle of the night and yell BINGO!, or if you’ve ever slow danced at a Waffle House, YOU might be a Redneck!                                                                                                                       *We missed Helen and Chucks’ anniversary, but not Gaye’s birthday last Monday.  *Pres. Don gave out thank yous to Doug for taking over on short notice, to Gaye for her extra duty with the Christmas party, stockings and games for JRF and Camelot.  *Bingo John couldn’t tell how much money we made on 136 players because we bought stuff we haven’t used yet. Maybe we should go to the accrual accounting method.  Bingo again on the 9th.                                                                                                                                                  *Dwayne Shannon IS improving, just slower than anticipated. Francis Buckman recovering at Andover Rehab after knee surgery. And Bonnie Kutilek comes home on New Year’s Day. *Drawing: As Don Kutilek was trying to talk he fined Tom for ‘popping off’, then had ‘Pete” draw Gaye and Mike Berry’s numbers for the chocolates and North High gift card. Promptly donated to Camelot.
THE PROGRAM
Gaye introduced Camelot team leader Devon Bray and four student, each with their own story and thank you cards for giving them a special Christmas. Camelot has been a national program to help troubled youth for 30 years, but it has only been in Wichita a short time. Here it is known as Camelot Riverside Academy just north of Sim Park. Devon came from a Dysfunctional family and seems to know how to help kids from similar situations. Young folks stay on the average 3 months for schooling and spiritual counseling. They are State funded with donations accepted. Nicholas’ mother passed away 7 months ago, and he has been at Camelot 4 months. Angers still ‘hits’ him, but the committee helps. Vanessa used to be very shy, but after 2 months at Camelot she is improving. She told of the 7 levels of students from Concern to Hawk. 15 year old Chandler had been abused, lived on the streets, and sold drugs, is now a Hawk and had a well prepared speech for us. 14 year old Ebony  had been raised by her grandmother, and she says the staff at Camelot is very supportive. She has written two plays, one showing how we can work together, and one on learning to like herself first.   What a great cause we are supporting.

The blessing given to us by Tom Garrelts, who led the Pledge of Alligiance.                                                  *Acting president Doug continued the Redneck humor: If your kid’s favorite bedtime story is; Curious George and the High Voltage Fence.                                                                                                     *Guests: Katie Todd brought a picture poster and thank you cards from her ‘Girl Power’ kids from Lincoln that she took to visit WSU. They help at risk kids find direction in life.                                                                                                                                            *We sang and provided monetary gifts to our excellent waitstaff.                                                                       *Dwayne is still at home very slowly recovering from his hospital visit, and we know his Optimism will serve him well while improving.  Garry Dietsch also missed the meeting, but not the party after a short hospital visit. Bob Harrington still looking for some visitors. And Don Kutilek was helping Bonnie get better.                                                                                            *Bingo: Gaye reported (in John’s absence) that we made about $250 from 122 players.             *In our Sgt-at-Arms absence, John Strunk volunteered his fine for not wearing his badge.          *Drawing: Marc had JD draw Doug’s number for the poinsettia, and Tom drew Jay’s number for the autographed Dick & Jane book.
THE PROGRAM
Jane George aptly and enthusiastically introduced Andale and Friends graduate and now Director of Development for Music Theater, Matt May. Matt told of MTW’s structure: 7 full time employees, more than a hundred in the summer, and the many other projects besides producing five Broadway plays. They have and apprentice program, teen interns, the Teen Choir, Jester awards for high school students, etc.  Director Wayne Bryan came here for the summer 20 years ago and stayed because he liked the community. They interview actors in Minneapolis, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Dallas for lead parts, and they do produce Broadway plays. This summer you can see: The producers, Camelot, Kiss Me Kate, Miss Saigon, The Drowsy Chaperone, and an extra show (we are one of a very few that Disney allows) High School Musical 2!  He also told of an annual backstage tour that shows the enormous task of producing a show in two weeks!    Thank you Jane.

THE PROGRAM
Clever Irv Sullivan introduced John Strunk and his silent DVD presentation of the history of his land and the reason he relented and sold a portion to Via Christy. Actually John narrated in person much better. John’s grandfather Mohr arrived in the U.S. in 1892 after serving in the German army. He slept in a hayloft for two years., and though he worked hard, coming from a fairly wealthy family, he was able to purchase the ground off 21st in 1898. He was always a big supporter of the community, especially the El Dorado Orphanage. When Via Christy called John said the ground was not for sale because his grandpa said that ground is for growing FOOD.  After it was that this 120 acres would only be used for medical purposes the deal was sealed and the virtual ground breaking was earlier this year. Via Christy sent John a golden box of ‘dirt’ from the ground breaking. The farmhouse is on the National Historic Register so it is safe on John’s remaining property. Grandpa Mohr had 5 boys and 2 girls, one was John’s mother. John’s dad died when he was 11 months old, but his mother married his dad’s brother, a WWII Vet. John still has a small pocket pistol that his grandpa brought over on the ship (they didn’t have scanners in 1892).  History is always a great story. Thank you John!

THE PROGRAM
Don Kutilek began where he left off – one week after his discharge.  He then went to K-State for animal husbandry. He moved to Wichita and took a job as clerk in a cattle department. He was soon upgraded to cattle buyer.  He made $100 a week at Excel on his next move up to cattle buyer around the country. He had learned even as a clerk to determine the grade of the cattle.  It takes 50-60 bushels of corn to make a fat cow.  He said packing house work is very hard and told how he watched the skinning of cattle eventually become automated. After working for Excel’s owner, Sam Marcus,  Don went on his own and learned the buy stock cattle to go to the feed lots. In 1975 he left the cattle buying business to go into the commodities business from which he retired.

Brittany Stever has really grown. At 14 she is 6 ft and the tallest girl o her basketball squad.  She talked to us about wheelchair sports and the benefit game they play with the Wichita Thunder in March. Brittany had to leave early to make practice at Clearwater but Mark took up the story.     He agreed with Brittany that the practice can be more fun that the game.  They have to agree not to hurt the Thunder players.  The money raised is used to buy sports equipment for the kids. It is amazing how much a good sports wheelchair costs.  JD even talked about playing Nick Taylor, a very famous wheelchair tennis player, at WSU.  Nick was questioning whether JD looked like a student to him.

THE PROGRAM
John Strunk introduced Larry Booze, and sure enough he is an avid fisherman. But he also has been a roofing contractor for 29 years ( broofing@kscoxmail.com ). He has been an active supporter of the Cheney Lake Association (CLA) and their mission to improve the quality of recreation at the State Park there. Not known as the ‘Big Muddy’ anymore since they have added a rock jetty around the lake. They used to have over 300 members, but since the improvements have been added, they now have a solid 65 to 70 members ($35 a year). Besides the jetty, they have donated and built a 30’ X 60’ building, a fish cleaning station and a courtesy dock to accommodate more than one vessel. In the last 17 ½ years they have raised $5,500,000  to use in their mission. The big event of the year is OK Kids Day when invited kids can fish ride boats, play games. Even Ken Lockwood (rehabilitates birds of prey) was there on May 3rd OK Kids Day. Of the kids attending last May, some were children of a parent serving in Iraq. Larry passed around a photo album showing the fun that was had. He said ‘No kid goes home with a boo-boo lip!  Thank you John for introducing us to a great program in which we could become involved.

THE MEETING
Irv Sullivan’s inspirational prayer blessing our educators led us into our Flag salute.                                   *Bingo John had to leave early, but he did say we will need lots of help this Friday because the numbers are high, and the two $1000 jackpots might go. This always brings a big crowd.   *The Prez’s cultural moment states that you might be a Redneck if: You stare at a can of frozen OJ because it says right on the can….’concentrate’, or if you steroids need a little PH!   *Birthdays: Don reminded me that Jane’s birthday is coming up (It’s January 17th, I’ll remember). THE PROGRAM
Dawn says Sherman Padgett gets respect at North High, and I can see why. This editor’s son, Tony puts him at the top of the list of educators (Tony was at Heights when Mr. Padgett was the asst. principal).  After stints as art teacher at Truesdale and South, asst. principal at Heights, he was asst. to Denise Wren at North before taking the reins for 1900 students at North High. With a staff of 122 teachers, he says that is his main job. Developing a positive, Optimistic attitude among the teachers. That, in turn developes a healthy dose of environmental structure. He reminds us that though times have changed, kids need and really want to respect and interact with teachers. His three R’s are telling: R-Rigor, R-Relevance, R-Relationships.  His WWI & II veteran grandfather taught him how to fish, smoke, chew, cuss, and to behave, and that is what kids don’t have today….a teacher in the home! He believes it’s their job to prepare kids to be able to attend college, and homework should not challenging. Gangs! 3 days suspension when any form of intimidation is spotted. Joe, Tom, Marc and Dwayne had questions. Sherman is a very impressive leader.

THE PROGRAM
Dr Dan introduced former member Mark Stever (after five minutes of humorous aged stories). Mark was a member from 95’ until 03’. In 2001 Mark was in a serious car accident which caused a spinal cord paralysis, and his chances to survive were in question. Mark, an Air Force vet is a strong person, and he not only survived, but is excelling in his new role with PVA (Paralyzed Veterans of America). He related how much our club has meant to him, especially when he was recuperating in St Louis (Floyd provided the air transportation). He filled 3 of Gaye’s large hand-made pillow cases with cards and letters he received, mostly from Optimists. In 2005, Mark developed a disease that paralyzed him from the neck down, and though many take months to improve, he beat it in weeks. Mark now loves his job with PVA and his role of helping veterans with their due benefits and rights, and he assists in writing VA regulations.  Plus he gets to travel a lot! Founded in 1946, back then the life expectancy for a spinal cord injury was 2 years, during WWI it was 2 days, and after Viet Nam it was 15 years plus.
*We were interested in knowing about his 6’ 14 year old daughter Britney, an A student in Clearwater. We’ll see her again around Thanksgiving or Christmas when she visits our club.    *Garry, John Browning, Chuck, Irv, and Dr Dan commented.

THE MEETING
Such a wonderful beginning for the day as Irv’s blessing and flag salute is always starts us off.      *Of course, President Don’s cultural moment might give us insight to his upbringing: You just might be a Redneck if:  ‘You and your father attended the same school…….at the same time’, or ‘If your dad walked you to school to attend the same grade!’                                                                       *Garry Deitsch introduced former member’s daughter Katie Todd. She is graduating from WSU on Dec 14.  She is taking 9 Lincoln Elementary 4th grade girls (CSI girl Power) to visit various facilities on the WSU campus to give them an idea of what going to college is all about. She needed $54 to help with this mission. Floyd suggested passing the hat, and over $100 was collected.                                                                                                                                            *Dwayne reminded us that Reality University is coming to South High November 20-21. We had 13 help out at North, and he is looking for even more to help out at South.                               Dwayne also said to pray for Ralph Nader. His chances didn’t look good!                                                           *Bingo:  Gaye (in John’s absence) reported that she, Muriel, Mike, Donna, Stan, and John raised $510 fro 109 folks. But…..we haven’t given out the big money yet!                                               *Garry reminded us of the once every two years chance to see an unbelievable collection of vintage cars this Saturday at 9:30 sharp! Meet at Custom Interiors on West Kellogg.  Bring any car buffs you know. If you haven’t seen a 1919, 1920, 1921, 1922, 1923, 1924, 1925, 1926, etc Rolls, plus so many others, all restored to original condition, then now is the time. Sure, bring your camera!                                                                                                                                                                       *Drawing: How often does it happen that the drawer is the drawee? Well, it happened again. Don let Tom Garrelts draw his own number for the box of Nifty Nuts.
THE PROGRAM
Jay Minter was so excited to introduce Jim Means, director of Wichita’s VoTech program in the high schools. Since Ralph used to be a counselor at Trusdale, he has followed the vocational program. Jim attended Wichita High School East and graduated from WSU, and has been 26 years teaching in our schools. He emphasized that a smile sometimes gets you through high school, but that goes only so far. He said businesses want a worker that can read, write, and be timely…..they can teach the rest. USD 259 is beginning to realize that a technical education is so important, and in various high schools many professional are taught. From Accounting, Automotive technician, Business and computer technology, Cabinetmaking and Design, Communications, Computer aided drafting and programming, Construction, Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management, Childhood Education and Human Services, Family and consumer Sciences, Fashions, Textiles and Interiors, Health Occupations, Machinist/Machine Technology, Marketing, Pre-engineering, Skilled Mechanical Crafts, Welding Technologist, and even Motorcycle Technician are all electives in this program.

THE MEETING
Irv began the meeting with the blessing and Flag salute.                                                                           President Don’s ‘CULTURAL MOMENT’: When you consider your license plate personalized because your father made it, or when the judge sentences you to ‘the usual’…….you might be a redneck!                                                                                                                                                             Even though Jim Erxleben was absent, we thought about singing happy birthday  (10-19).        *Bingo: John reported that we made $518.80!!! We must still have two jackpots to give out next week. John thanked Gaye, Donna, Muriel, Mike, and Stan for working extra diligently.     *Dwayne presented past president Doug with a BEE-U-TI-FUL Canadian necktie in lieu of something American, for his year of service.                                                                                            *Garry  announced that November 1 at 9:30 AM Sharp is your chance to see an unbelievable collection of vintage automobiles. Meet at Custom Interiors on West Kellogg.                                             *Chuck again pushed for us to give a Dime A DAY to OI. Some other club gave more than us last year! Sign up!                                                                                                                                                 *Jane reported that she took $95 to Victory in the Valley. Not bad for 3 months of nickels, dimes, and quarters for the Childhood Cancer Campaign, huh?                                                          *Sgt-at-Arms Don Kutilek (always thinking) reported that we have one charter member from our 1954 origination---Francis Buckman. Also that we have two sibling members: Floyd and Muriel, a father-son Tom & Paul, and five married couples: Chuck & Helen, Dan & ‘Pete’, Don & Debbie, Jay & Ralph, and of course a Dick & Jane.  Thank you Don.                                                                                  *Don had Judge Pilshaw draw Dawn’s number for the giant calculator brought by Joe Lang.       *President Don thanked Dawn for volunteering to head up the Essay contest.
THE PROGRAM
After Joe Lang’s short pa/paw dog story, he introduced Judge Rebecca Pilshaw so she would have equal time.  Judge Pilshaw is the only female judge in the District at this time. They always seem to be voted out for a second term, even Kim Parker (shows me that those who vote are uninformed. She is the only Democrat in her family, but politics should not be considered when electing judges. There are now 26 judges, and two more are being added next year. Judge Pilshaw’s dad nicknamed her ‘Rebel’, appropriate by her own words she is loud and intimidating. She has to be tough after 250 jury trials! She loves being a judge, she expects only the best, and she loves it that Optimists are friends of children. A past president of Make-A-Wish. She was a therapeutic foster parent for ten years, and has had approximately 20 foster children, besides her own 17 year old son (she raised as a single parent). Now she is a foster parent for dogs and cats from the Humane Society. Judge Pilshaw has staying power---she was appointed in 1993 and was elected later. There were many questions that she appropriately answered.
A firm judge, tough on crime!  Sounds pretty good.

The North Club was chartered in 1954, and I remember it well as my Dad and Bill Kenney spent many days recruiting members.                                                                                        Don presented the 08’-09’ budget and emphasized that our main function is to serve youth. We plan to an Essay, Oratorical, and a Communication contest for deaf & Hard of Hearing. Respect for Law, fishing expeditions, and the CPRA Queen Pageant will be a part of our Spring activities. Christmas food baskets, Reality U., Juvenile Residential Center, and Unsung Heroes will keep us busy in the Winter. Childhood Cancer giving will continue throughout the year. We plan to be involved on November 23 with the Simon Evening of Giving also.  Don will be looking for committee chairs for our many events, so raise your hand to help. Tom Garrelts in membership chairman and Paul Garrelts is Unsung Heroes Chairman. Don is not interested in awards, he just wants us to be more involved in serving our young people. Together WE CAN is the message. Don will put together a printed list of the District, Zone, and Club officers plus an updated membership list with phone numbers (year joined) for us all.
It’s going to be a great year!!!

Tom is the fourth generation with Built Rite Construction.                                                                                                                                   *Dr Dan did forgo fining Judge Owens because of all the cases he has been dealing with lately.    *Mike Macomber just found out that J D is a neighbor. THE PROGRAM
Ralph Minter gracefully introduced Janet Wright, Director of Wichita Festivals. Janet is a member of the East Rotary Club, and though lively, she said now near as lively as our club! Festivals manages the Riverfest AND the Flight Festival! Janet let us know that Clyde Cessna, Lloyd Stearman and Walter Beech started out together building planes! Wichita Festivals with a staff of eleven is located at 1820 E. Douglas, so just drop by anytime to see what’s going on or to volunteer. They are non-profit, not affiliated with the city, and have no direct funding. With a $2,000,000 budget, they do need lots of ticket sales and corporate sponsors. Managing the budget is her main responsibility. We learned why some events are no longer----lack of interest or lack of sponsors. To enter a float (Optimist) is easy, just call the festival’s office and get an application. The Riverfest started as a 2 day Centennial Celebration in 1970, and the Wagonmasters and Windwagon Smith were on the scene in 1974.
PS:  ‘Pete’ is a distant relative of Orvile and Wilbur Wright!

THE PROGRAM
Annette Wood wrote a book (with built in coffee stains): A different Kind of Kin: for relatives of Persons with Autism. Her little sister (she was looking forward to playing house with) was born with Autism. Jan diagnosed in 1958 when very little was known about the brain development diorder, and the lack of understanding made dealing with the situation difficult for the entire family. At that time 1 in 10,000 children were diagnosed, and today it is one in 150!  Annette presented a picture board of her family during those early years. We found that Jan lived with the family until she was eight before going to an institution where she lived for 32 more years. Annette read the 14 signs of Autism, and we all realized we have known people with some of the signs. The disorder does run in families. Annette had some suggestions in dealing with situations: Acknowledge your feelings, hold family discussions, stay informed about autism, deal with embarrassing situations-then move on, keep your sense of humor, and find a friend whose sibling also has autism.

THE MEETING
Tom Garrelts began the blessing in an Optimistic direction, and led the flag salute.                   President Doug says: ‘Don’t ask friends for more’n they would give on their own.’                      *The Board met last week and voted to donate $500 to the Central Plains Rodeo. They also decided to not use the folk at IWCCI for bingo help.                                                                                  *Ralph and Jay Minter celebrate their 63rd? 67th? (It’s been a lo-ong time) Anniversary on 9/11.                                                                                                                                                                    *Jane George made an exciting announcement: Her son Greg is a pilot for Jet Blue, and Jet Blue received the contract to fly the Republican nominees for the next six weeks. They painted the two planes and retrofitted them in 24 hours, and Greg was one of 5 (out of 100) to be selected to fly Sarah Palin home and to her campaign stops. Maybe we could get him to come speak sometime.                                                                                                                                 *Bingo: Not last week, but this Friday. Let’s help out.                                                                                *Don had our Gov Chuck draw Mike Berry’s number for the North Optimist Club jacket.

THE PROGRAM
Don Kutilek introduced Don Kutilek who filled us in on the musical portion of his life. Fascinating to me how he was a piano protégé when he was 8! At 10 years old, Mrs. Ross, his teacher told him told him that he could be a concert pianist. At 12 he didn’t have that ambition, but wanted to learn popular music. At North High School Don was 2nd chair trumpet in the band. As a junior he help start a swing band (bring it back Don), and they played the Allis, the Eaton, and other ‘fine’ venues. As a senior the band had an offer to play Swingland!  Don liked telling about his Navy experience: A zootsuiter from Calif. When getting a haircut, the barber asked ‘do you want to keep your sideburns?’……’yes’….’then hold out your hand’. As a cadet Don was station in Nebraska! He said there were no ‘Jap’ attacks there. After the Navy Don studied animal husbandry at Kansas State (or was that Kansas A&M). At 25 years old, Don quit the piano to go into the cattle business, and he left us there.

THE MEETING
Irv Sullivan led with a heartwarming blessing, and our flag salute.                                                   *We missed regulars Jay and Ralph, Gaye, Mike, and others for a terrific program.
*School board member , Lynn Rogers dropped off the promise list of where the $370,000,000 would be spent. Interesting, and now I see why line item vetos are so important.
*President Doug reminds us: ‘Coolness and a steady nerve will always beat simple quickness. Take yer time and you’ll only need to pull the trigger once.’ Me thinks there is a message there.                                                                                                                                                                                         *Birthdays: And we sang to George Kreidler (8/24) and Don Kutilek (8/28).                                    *Bingo John had plenty of help to raise $367.64, and he is concerned that enough folk will remember bingo this Friday. The 5th Friday of the month.  Thanks John!!!
*Governor Chuck would like to help President Doug to become a honor president. Easy for us to help, just find someone you believe to be an optimist, and help him or her become a FOO!  That’s Friend of Optimists. Fill out the app, include $100, and give to Chuck Mansfield. You have 4 weeks.  What will your Legacy be?                                                                                                                                                Drawing: First, Irv said something about a collusion during last weeks drawing, so Don had our president draw Muriel’s number for the unnamed door prize.

Claude Hodges, Director of Lakeside Academy was inspiring and inspired by us. Tom Garrelts explained that  Lakeside Academy (formerly King’s Ranch) is a Level 5 Residential Treatment Center. Claude is the perfect Director, having grown up in Detroit, getting in lots of ‘jams’ before joining the Marines, and having a mentor that he tries to pattern his life after. Since Camelot For Kids (home office Coral Springs, Tx) purchased the Academy in April, there have been many facilities changes on the 128 acres with 3 pools, mostly new beds, big screen TV, clean and updated quarters. The program is designed for troubled youth from 12 to 18. Drug & Alcohol treatment programs, Ropes course, Academic program, Faith/Spirituality training , and generally life skills are their main focus. Claude brought students David (Garden City) and Tim Rogers (Iola) to present their story. The average stay is 90 days, but Tim had been there when it was King’s Ranch and he related the positive changes. The Academy capacity is 45 and 21 are presently housed there. Claude said the students sure could use the positive influence of Optimists. Marc, Dick, Helen, Dwayne, donna, Irv, and bob Bundy had questions.

THE MEETING
Tom Garrelts got us off to a great spiritual start!
*The ‘prez’ says: ‘Just because a man takes his boots off to wade in, don’t mean he plans to swim the Atlantic.’                                                                                              *Guests: Garry brought a crowd! Four grandchildren and a fiancé from Minnesota and Colorado; Heather and fiancé Russ, Travis, Troy, and Mathew.

*George Kreidler celebrate his birthday on the 24th…..Happy-Happy George.
*John and Ruth Strunk celebrated their anniversary today, on the 20th.
*Chuck reported that ‘his’ last District meeting went off without a hitch. He thanks all those that helped with registration: Joe Voss, Donna, J.D., Jane, Gaye, etc.
*Bingo: No bingo last week, but the next two Fridays in a row, and we expect BIG money with the help of Muriel, Donna, Mike, Clark, Doug, Gaye, John, Paul, and others.
*Drawing: SGT at Arms Don (to be fair) had Judge Joe draw Judge Clark’s number for the gift certificate.
THE PROGRAM
Muriel introduced Phil Giavanni with the newly formed (2005) Patriot Guard. What a story! The Guard was originally formed by the VFW, or better yet the American Legion riders, but since has included anyone with a desire to help. The guard helps honor fallen soldiers during their ceremony. They accept cars, cycles, or any means to join in, and they will travel most anywhere.  They honor the brave during funerals, homecomings, send offs or whatever. A couple named Richard and Joyce always bring their pickup loaded with drinks and snacks for longer trips. The Kansas Patriot Guard did ride recently to Newton and on to Eureka carrying 10’ flagpoles.  They show respect and help the family during their time of grief. Thank you Phil for all you do.

*The prez quotes from A Cowboys guide to life:  ‘There never was a horse that couldn’t be rode; and there never was a rider that couldn’t be throwed’.                     *Guests: Joe Voss brought Derrick Shore, John Fergusen brought bingo helper and future North Optimist Stan Beard, and Tom Garrelts brought Tom Jarvis*The sign up sheet for the installation banquet on September 30 was passed around, and I think everyone signed up.                                                                           *Bingo: John reluctantly mentioned a loss at bingo because of a smaller crowd (95) and paying out two big winners. Also mentioned that a decision on Bingo being non-smoking will be made by Sept 22.                                                                              *Drawing: Don Kutilek let Gaye draw because she was seen on Women in the Outdoors on TV.    Guest -  Derrick Shore won the PIE!

*WSU basketball coach Greg Marshall was the guest speaker at the West Optimist meeting at the Scotch Wed at noon.  I (Gaye)  attended the luncheon &  sat next to Greg.  He is exceptional!!!! We spoke on his expertise as a caddy. He makes you feel like his best friend.  Greg is a phenomenal speaker. He reported that of the 6 returning athletes only 1 is healthy.  Of the 13 new scholarship athletes 8 (or 11) were freshman or sophomore. All came for the 2 summer workshops and he is Optimistic about the future.

THE PROGRAM
Marc Kaplan surprised us with introducing 2 term (non paid) school board member, Lynn Rogers. Surprised, because of the tone of Marc’s numerous editorials that the Eagle has published. If we were on the fence about the $370,000,000 bond issue, Mr. Rogers made a good case to vote yes. The number one issue is class size (the State average is 13 per class?), and # 2 is safe rooms. Safe rooms will have reinforced walls (with financial help from FEMA) that will withstand 225 mph wind. Where are these kids coming from? We added 1200 kids this year, and other schools have increased enrollment also. Lynn reviewed various schools added students: Stucky from 600 to 625, Cloud from 719 to 790, Seltzer from 600 to 715, and North from 1400 to 1900. We want to add more technical ed, raise test scores, and increase graduation rates. A comparable bond issue is Goddard’s $66 million. There were many questions from Jay, Pete, Marc, Dick, Stan, and others.  We appreciate what you do Lynn.

THE MEETING
Tom Garrelts blessed our morning and thanked for our right to vote and for our wisdom.
*The prez says: ‘A person who agrees with all your palaver is either a fool or he’s getting’ ready to skin ya’ .’                                                                              Dwayne Shannon noted that one of our original members (60’s) Jack Perrin had passed away.                                                                                                   *Chuck rounded up five voting members for the District convention.                   *Doc Thompson quoted from The Prairie Dog Press, a story about Pastor Tom who traded his bike for a lawnmower that wouldn’t start. A boy told him that you have to ‘cuss’ for it to start! Pastor Tom said it has been so long since he had uttered a cuss word, that he forgot how. The boy said ‘keep pull’n, it’ll come back to you’.
*John reported that we are gradually getting more bingo players, and we need extra floor workers for this Friday night.                                                                *Don Kirkland assuming drawing duties had Mike Berry draw Gaye’s number (it had been a long time) for the pie.

THE PROGRAM
Dwayne Shannon introduced his ‘dear’ friend (because he could see the golf ball form over 100 yards away) Doug Hazelwood to expound on the Hazelwood history, and he cut him off with a Spear’s cup before he even got to the United States!  Doug’s dad came to from England to Toronto when he was 6 years old. Doug born in 33’ began his life helping out in the pool hall and ice cream parlor. You see, his grandfather lost his leg when he was a brakeman for the railroad, then became a barber among other things. Doug worked the farm when he was very young, had a paper route when he was 10, got his driver’s license when he was 16, bought a motorcycle, graduated grade 13, worked in a service station, and became fascinated with aircraft. Met a RCAF pilot who became his mentor. He also met a guy who became his best friend and brother in law (they married sisters). He went to Centralia for flight school, officer’s training, advanced training teaching on the T33. That was after instructer’s school in Trenton. About then he met Jackie, and when they accidently went to a horror movie, she screamed and held on tightly to Doug (the beginning). Turns out she was the only female in the theater, so everyone knew who did the screaming. They courted back and forth fo Montreal, being a pilot helped here. In Trenton, Doug was fortunate when they landed the Albatross on a frozen lake, and when taking off, heard a cracking noise…..barely made it up! So much more, but time is of the essence.

LOOKING FORWARD
Aug   6-----Our president presents: ……………
Aug  13----Marc Kaplan: The saga continues
August 14-17—District Convention at the Airport Hilton. Come watch our hometown Governor set the stage for Optimism.
Aug  20----Muriel Walpole: Excited?  Maybe?
THE MEETING
Joe Voss began with a prayer and Pledge, and so did we.
President Doug: ‘Tellin’ a man to go to hell and makin’ him do it are two entirely different propositions.’
*Ron Stever dropped in to see us, looking to see Joan Finney.
*Anthony Winn with IWCCI brought Michelle, Adam, and Christia (John praised her effort at bingo) came to inform us of a new added mission of the chess organization. They will begin teaching chess in retirement villages. Chess certainly helps prevent Alzheimers, andit’s more fun than crosswords.
*Birthdays: We sang? To Ron Stever (7/11) and absentee Dawn (7/31)
*Bob (absent on his wedding anniversary, can’t blame him) and Marilyn Bundy 7/30/55.
*Please fill out incoming president Don Kirkland’s interest survey.  He is motivated to make this civic club the best it can be, and we are going to help him!
*Bingo: John reported a profit of $218.75 from 115 players..  thanks to Stan Beard (future Optimist member), and Donna Kozera on skates.  Two floor walkers with 15 players is not enough. One more person makes an extra $50….at least.
* Drawing: Don fined our governor for making fun of Dwayne’s December job.  And Pete paid a year’s fines for not wearing her name badge. So she got to draw Anthony Winn’s number for the St Nicholas, the patron saint of children and wayward women…..and of pawnbrokers.
THE PROGRAM
R G (Bucky) Walters drew a crowd of 33 to the meeting. Bucky a hair stylist by trade donates much of his time MCing events and performing in Gridiron, Music Theater, and he just Tuesday night at Dawson Grimsley’s Roast was the first to give his views. In fact he began by saying all three TV anchors were roasters, and what their GM might be briefing them about. Davis Moore (50%) and Renee Stevens, the organizer of the event (Spangles the other 50%) might be offended if they were not careful.  Actually Bucky had takes on about 12 subjects, and had us all in stitches. Ron Stever reminded him of when he had hired Bucky to perform as Gov Finney at his son’s wedding reception. One attendee thought it really was Joan Finney and was surprized that her arms were so HAIRY.  Francis reminded us that Bucky’s column in the Old Town Gazette is a don’t miss read.
Thanks Bucky for providing a change of pace for our Wednesday morning.

July 23, 2008

THE MEETING
Tom Garrelts opened with an Optimistic prayer and Flag Salute.
Pres Doug is running out of A Cowboy’s Guide: “Always try to be a bit nicer than is called for, but don’t take too much guff.”
*We sang Happy Birthday to Bob Bundy. He was humbled.
*Bingo: John reported no income because there was no bingo last week. THIS Friday night we need pull tab salespeople.
*Incoming president, Don Kirkland wants to know what you like, don’t like, and HOW YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP. He passed out a survey. Fill it out!  It is like VOTE…or you can’t complain.
**Don Kutilek had Dwayne Shannon draw Helen’s number for a gift certificate to the Copper Oven.

THE PROGRAM
Tom vividly introduced Barbara Ale, Chaplain for JDF….among other things. Barb’s past and present is an amazing story. Growing up in Philly (developing toughness), 14 years in Hawaii (developing softness), Getting her degree from Tabor college, being on welfare, getting food stamps, (the father of her children is serving his 26th year in prison), and putting it all together in Wichita after finding City Church. Barbara has been on the Youth for Christ staff since 1993. She says now that she has the ‘best job in the world’. She deals with ‘Thugs and Thugetts’. She has that South Pacific influence in teaching life skills. Mentoring kids (all under 18) at JDF, and they are ALL Philadelphia Eagle fans (they wear green) has been a life rewarding experience because they relate to her. A recent success program is kids busing from judge Riddle’s Boy’s Ranch to her Sunday evening Bible study class. It just started 6 weeks ago, and every week sees increased attendance. She told stories, and one boy even said ‘That’s what I like about you, You tell me what I CAN do, not what I CAN’T do’. She is humbled that God trusts her with kids. Keep on Barbara, you are a keeper!

July 16, 2008
NEXT UP

July  30---Regionally famed humorist Bucky Walters will tell us about his recent  stint with Music Theater.
Aug    6---Doug Hazelwood
Aug 13---Muriel Walpole
Aug 20----Marc Kaplan

THE MEETING
Irv Sullivan’s blessing emphasized Yesterday’s history, Tomorrow is a mystery.
V-P Don Kirkland stepped up in our president’s absence to pass on a little Alabama How to know if you are a redneck. ‘when a friend invites you over to their home……….to help take the wheels off’.    ‘When you see the sign—JUST SAY NO TO CRACK—reminds you to pull your pants up.’
*Bingo: John reported that with Donna on roller skates selling pull tabs, we made $482.12, even after giving out a jackpot. Clark, Donna, Christia (from IWCCI) and Stan were helping 143 players.
*Governor Chuck promoted our District Convention at the Airport Hilton August 15th-17th. Our Club is in charge of registration the first two days. A great time to meet Optimists from across the State.
*Jim Erxleben didn’t forget. He brought a $25 Wingnuts cap to the drawing winner from a few weeks back.  Jim, You ARE the Man!
*Drawing: As JD collected money. The winner sat across from this writer, and won a Bird song clock. Thank you Paul. The Robin is singing as I type.
1
THE PROGRAM
Paul did some research on the web and found out many tidbits about Jim Schwarzenberger, VP Talent Acquisition & Work force Development for the Chamber. He grew up in Western Kansas and schooled in a one room-8 grades school before moving to Olathe. In Wichita he has been on the Catholic charities Board, Visioneering of Wichita, Maize Special Steering Committee, and much more. His job is to SELL Wichita (it’s our job also). Jim passed out a questionnaire, and many of us were surprised to find that when the 80 million ‘boomers’ retire only 46 million will replace them. And for those born between 80’ and 95’, when choosing a job the most important thing is Where they will live……not money, not advancement, not what they will do! The national median price for a home is $196,300……in Wichita it is $112,700. So-o-o Among metros with populations under 1 million, Wichita’s manufacturing employment ranks #1! Jim passed out ‘WE FOUND IT IN WICHITA’  dvd’s to those that got the most questions right.  Thanks Paul and Jim for speaking with us on 18 hours notice.

*Drawing for a pie went to Bob Bundy.

THE PROGRAM

Pete declared this was the 3rd and final installment in her life history. Pete started by showing us her black and white polka dot shoes. Pete’s grandfather was captured by Cantrill during the civil war. Not known to take prisoners alive, Pete was glad that they were hunger and willing to trade prisoners for food so that she could be here. At age 16 Pete was going to KU. How’s that for brilliance. She married Dan in 1950 and it snowed 16 inches. The next day Dan drove in a ice storm very fast in his 1942 Ford back to Lawrence. They moved to their current home in Wichita in 1957. Pete gave good advice on discipline.  She use to hang her son Sanny on a doorknob.  She had a paddle that said ”For the cute little dear with a bare behind”. Pete went to work for Dr. Dan until her son needed a job and she gave him hers. She then worked for 5 counselors who she described as “Divas” and retired in 1999.  She told of all her kids and grandkids and had us all in stitches.  Her cats and the invasion of the mice story also were entertaining. What a fun life Pete has lived and it was so generous of her to share it.

FUTURE
July   4—BINGO                                                                                                                                           July   9—John Ferguson                                                                                                                           July  16--???                                                                                                                                                      July  23--???                                                                                                                                                 July 30—Bucky Walters or Dan Kerschen (Jane’s brother running for State Representative).
THE MEETING
Again the Reverend Tom Garrelts gave us a jump start, always saying the right stuff.           *The pres says: ‘Trust everybody in the game, but ALWAYS cut the cards’.                                   *Irving celebrated 65!! Years of marriage on the first, AND became a GREAT grandpa of triplets.  Dr Dan Thompson (much younger than Irv) celebrates his 89th birthday next Tuesday.  *Lounging at the Lake was first class. Those that missed would have wished they hadn’t. Mitch was Captain of the boat (a beautiful day to cruise), The professionally prepared salmon (4 varieties) and burgers were wonderful, the J.D. humorous auction netted $1100, and the overall profit will be near $2300. Thank you Gaye and Donna for a great afternoon of fun with friends.                                                                                                                                                                             *CCC: Jane reported that she is taking $187 to Victory in the Valley (that includes $29 of collecting pennies, dimes, and quarters from The Pawn Shop).                                                                       *Bingo: In John’s temporary absence, Gaye reported a profit of $29. Nuff said!                            *Drawing: Don had Irv draw John Strunk’s number for the pie, but wait……there was another prize. So Don had Gaye draw…………yes,  John Strunk’s other number for the camera.        Dick is still waiting for last week’s prize.
THE PROGRAM
J.D. introduced State Senator and District Court  Judge candidate Phil Journey. He has been a State Senator since 2003, and 30 pieces of legislation that he introduced have been acted upon. I did get the feeling that it is a thankless job trying to do what is right, as Phil has done. He wasn’t really campaigning for judge today, but reviewing his career in the Senate. He relayed three ‘told you so’s’: THE Budget…….where do you cut? Not teachers, but administrative overload (no Jay, he didn’t say that, but I think it).  2. The law that treats kids as adults……a 10 yr old’s action will be on the record for life. 3. I forgot the 3rd one. Excuse my lethologica. Phil is definitely not a macrologist. He is very passionate and informed about the people of his district. And aware of legislature’s problem of dealing with and being informed about it’s citizens. One representative collected 90 feet of paper during one term…..we questioned 90 feet, and Phil reconfirmed!  Wow, I still don’t believe it.
By the way….this editor will be in the city of lights next week and Marc or Gaye will be the editor.

THE MEETING
Irv blessed and blessed and blessed, and we felt good!  He also led us in the Flag salute.                             THE CULTURAL MOMENT:  You just might be a redneck if: You prefer to walk the excess length off your jeans instead  of having them altered, or you have ever worn cowboy boots with Bermuda shorts.                                                                                                                                                    *Irv and Marjorie were married 66 years ago on July 1st.  That’s 1943! From Hawaii Irv mailed Marjorie a ring, and she kept it!                                                                                                                               Gaye reports that Donna Kozera had a faling mishap and broke her hip. We might not see her for a few weeks, so send get well cards to 14603 W. 21st St    67235.                                                               *At the FRF Summer Blast, the water balloons were a hit! President Don suggests that if you are missing these events, you need to check out you optimistic outlook.                                                    *Tom Garrelts spent his birthday (all day) in the hospital……in the waiting room! Jeanne was in for a minor operation.                                                                                                                                             *Sgt at Arms Don had past president Marc Kaplan draw Doug Hazelwood’s number for a Braums gift certificate.
THE PROGRAM
Don Kutilek at his ‘prime’! His informative talk about his days in the cattle biz, buying and selling. Livestock and byproducts.  Much info that I was wondering about including cattle is sold anywhere from 200 lbs to 1200 lbs, the difference between grazing and grain fed (in fact we are the only country in the world where cattle are grain fed).  Did you know a cow will eat 50 bushels before it is ready for market? Up until 1960 cattle could be sold at the terminal market, but now there are just sale barns, basically auctions. There are two types of cattle, butchered or stock. Don says when buying meat don’t buy that over 80% lean stuff….needs a little more marbling…75% is even better. Remember Excell, Swift, Armour, and Cudahy? Where did they go-----they went with the smell on 21st. How many cattle are there in those Western Kansas? Would you guess 10,000 per, nope they each have from 30 to 50,000 head. I’m sure the ‘byproducts’ are plentiful. Don was done at 8, but we asked questions until 20 after. Great program Don, Thanks.

THE PROGRAM
Donna Kozera presented Lamont Love, program  director ( creator) of LIF Inc ( Love Is Foundation) a not for profit serving young men ages 13 to 18.He turns 30 at Junes end but has energy, dreams, and desire of a man beyond those years. This home for troubled youth was born out of his upbringing with a single mom, & 3 siblings, lots of personal loss and the vision to realize you can change and affect teens if you work intensely with small numbers, so the home serves only up to 6 youth at a time. Their mantra is “eliminate all excuses” for not helping yourself and “break the cycle “of failure or negative choices. Establish trusting relationships, love, and communication. Set short and long term goals, be productive, and learn basic survival skills of living, (i.e.
plumbing, auto, construction, finance, budgets, savings etc.). Do some community service, get mentors, tutors and hugs. Lots of hugs, lots of love.  Lamont started this with his own money and now uses donations and grants to fund the home and operations of the group. Maybe we can be of assistance here. The home is at 2676 E. Conquest Ct, off of27th and Hillside. Thank you and good job!!

The good reverend Tom blessed the meals (and JD’s biking across Kansas) and led the salute.        *He’s at it again, the prez’ Cultural moment: you know you are a redneck if: You vacuum your sheets instead of washing them, or your toothbrush is a hand-me-down.                                            *Guests: Two sons, Tom’s Joshua, and Dick’s Tony                                                                                                  *We sang Happy Birthday to Helen (and she sang too!)                                                                         *Gary , Gaye and all agreed that the weekend fishing trip was terrific! Over 150 fish caught (big ones), the weather was perfect also. They were spoiled as the hook was baited, the fish were unhooked and filleted and brought home.                                                                                           *Chuck announced that besides CLASS and Lynn Gilkey assuming the SE Club’s charter, the NE Club is now the Deaf Connection Optimist Club of Wichita. Future Lt Gov. don Kirkland will brush up on his signing.                                                                                                                                     *Jay reported that she may save her eye!  Wearing sunglasses to protect her sensitive eye, she said that just before they were going to make the decision to remove it, it showed positive signs of improving. Eight Tylenol a day plus other stuff to relieve pain. She will go back Monday for evaluation. We will pray.                                                                                                 *Also reported that former member Hugh Price will be in rehab for 9 weeks! Two crushed vertebra from a car accident. You will find him at Grant’s Landing? Or call Jay.                             *Don had Ralph Minter draw ‘Pete’s’ number for the beautiful bag of something provided by Debbie Kirkland. She didn’t show us!
THE PROGRAM
Debbie Kirkland introduced her ‘new friend’ Sue Steele 18 years working for Wichita Public Schools out of the Wichita Children’s Home as the Homeless Liaison for Youth Services. Sue was colorful (flowered top), enthusiastic, and showed real caring for what she does. Her main job is getting kids back to school. Remember Megan Morgan our Unsung Hero? Sue helped her through the Bridges program. Her staff includes one full time social worker and one involvement worker. Part of a Federal grant from the 92’ No Child Left Behind program,  and she may get some of the stimulus money. She has helped work with children here from the Katrina and Greensburg disasters. From her job, she has changed her perception of homeless children…..they don’t all come from poverty.   Pre-school or school aged children have certain rights or protections under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act. Email her at ssteele@usd259,com       Thank you Debbie

July      1----Don Kutilek will begin July with a BANG!
THE MEETING
President Don interrupted the fellowship to begin the meeting, and asked ‘unprepared’ Tom to begin with a prayer. The good reverend prayed for JD and Mark’s bike safety, and the fishing trip safety this weekend.                                                                                                                                *The Cultural Moment continues: You know you are a redneck if: ‘You have ever driven around after a storm looking for your porch roof’ or ‘if your TP has numbers on it’. Don also told us about a driving trip he and Debbie took in Oklahoma, and they found that there might be some rednecks there. Noticing a dog wearing goggles riding a motorcycle, and a sign on a cattle truck that said: Don’t tell momma I drive a truck, she thinks I’m a piano player in a whorehouse.                                                                                                                                                          *Don read thank yous from Briana Baldwin (Unsung Hero) and Lynn Gilkey with CLASS. Past Governor Chuck Mansfield told us that CLASS will be taking over the SE Optimist Club charter.        *CLARK: Don’t forget that you and Jane have been married a long time on the 7th!                                      *Dwayne read from the Health Hunter a story entitled ‘An ant can’t move a rubber tree plant!’ A story about how Ruby Harrington keeps a positive mental attitude in supporting Bob in keeping his strength to enjoy life as it is. He enjoys reading, playing cards, and entertaining visitors.                                                                                                                                                                          *Dr Dan reports that Jay Minters may have a bruised eye when she returns. Her operation was reasonably successful from last Friday’s surgery.                                                                                                     *Joe reported that former member Hugh Price was in a car accident while returning from a visit with his wife in the hospital. He is in Via Christie St. Francis with a neck injury. Stay Optimistic Hugh.                                                                                                                                                       *Don Kutilek had (pres potential) Debbie Kirkland pull Don Kirkland’s ticket for the Kaplan provided pie.
There were some former members left out last week that I remember well: Rick Macias, Buddy Catstens, Ralph Olenik, Chuck Hartwell, Jack Perrin, Dwight Murphy, Hugh Polson, and Mike Angulo, in fact there were many more that slip my mind now that I think of it.  Wouldn’t it be cool, if we invited all former (alive) members back for a reunion meeting!
THE PROGRAM
Marc out did himself with the most entertaining informative program of the year (not that he couldn’t have done it himself), but Dr John Valusek is a premier lecturer on dealing with stress and burnout. He even wrote the book PEOPLE ARE NOT FOR HITTING. Most interesting was his early life story as his parents (15 years old) both arrived in NY from Slavia looking for gold in the streets. They didn’t find it, but found each other. A daughter was born in 21’, a son   in 23’, another son in 25’, and then John in 30’ when his mom was 39. He told the story because ‘he was the most important person he had ever met’, and he liked to relate storys of important people. His sister completed the 10th grade, his brothers left for the military before finishing high school, and mentors kept insisting that John continue his education. He ended up with a double doctorate degree from the university of Michigan.  His travels from NY to Utica, Mi. to Colorado to Wichita in 1961 for a two year commitment that turned into a 48 year stay.   Dr. Valusek has always been fascinated with the brain finding that it 100 billion cells. He has counseled many suicidal patients, and has never lost a one, using three key words: Perception, Awareness, and Choice. The good Doctor even had us belly laughing to improve our health.

Garry Dietsch after hearing JD’s commented that we should all gather such items and have our own fund raising garage sale. Hmmm, not bad ?
Kaps served coffee to those in need to assist the harried wait staff.
Sgt of Arms Don Kutilek sold drawing tickets and gave out good guff.

THE PROGRAM

Doug Hazelwood introduced Officer Joe Sites, Wichita Police Department.  A Wichitan for 47years, 28 years married, almost 20 years on the force, and his son is in his 10 month serving in Iraq.  His knows about home invasion which is different than burglary. Most are not random, but targeted for some reason, as 90 % are drug related. Burglars don’t really want anything to do with people, they just want your stuff. Criminals are more brazen today, so be aware of your surroundings, lock your door not just when you are away. Alarms are a good thing, but learn how to use them, and leave them on when you are at home. A alarm will reduce the time a burglar is in your home, as they usually strike from 9am to 3 pm. Much info to review on the DVDs that Officer Sites gave to everyone.  Thank you Doug for bringing us this much needed refresher course.

THE MEETING
Dwayne Shannon blessed our morning and led the Flag Salute.                                                                                             *President Don’s Cultural moment:  I think he can relate first hand.   You know you are a Redneck if:  ‘You have ever had to shoot the lock off your own front door’, or ‘Your satellite dish is held up with PVC pipe’, or ‘you trip over Christmas lights when picking up Easter Eggs’.     *Paul Garrelt’s Anniversary—May 14                                                                                                                       *The masses sang Happy Birthday to Chuck and Dick who missed the meeting last week.             *Paul extolled the virtues of fishing in Texhoma. The house sleeps seven, and the cowboy guide’s name is ‘SPOOKY’!  You reservations need to be in by May 27.                                                       *Dwayne quoted from his favorite Eagle section: ‘For a $5 button you can see evolution at work!                                                                                                                                                                        *President Don read a thank you card from our Bishop Carroll Unsung Hero Clair Dillard.           *John Ferguson received a BIG thank you from all of us for his dedicated, continuous work on Bingo.  He even brought $112.84 collected for Childhood Cancer, which will go directly to Victory in the Valley.                                                                                                                                              *Next year’s slate of officers (minus a president elect) were read and (thanks to Muriel) were voted in by acclamation.  The slate is in last week’s bulletin.                                                                                       *When asked what we did with our ‘stimulus $250.00’, J.D. said he returned his to the govment.  Ya’ think….if we all did that, our two trillion dollar debt would disappear in no time.                                                                                                                                                                         *It was noted that Floyd Walpole was the ARC employer of the year for the fifth straight year.   *Dick was fined (didn’t pay) for his wife Jane’s color picture in the Wichita Eagle. She was awarded best in the Via Christie system for competence in the job. It said nothing about optimism.                                                                                                                                                                       *Sgt-at-Arms Don had our Lt Gov draw Floyd Walpole’s number for 10 John Adams dollars.
THE PROGRAM
Dick was saved by Lt Governor Dow Summers making his quarterly visit. Saved, because his speaker who said  ‘don’t worry, I’ll be there’…..wasn’t there!    Dow was able to fill more than his allotted time by telling the story of how he started an Optimist club with 26 members in Ghana, Africa. And he has still never been to Africa. Back in 1982 when he was helping with advance voting at the Zoo, he met an man from West Africa who asked Dow about what Optimist clubs do. Dow said we did things for kids. From there Gabriel Yanke on September 27,  2007 chartered the Ghana club. It was interesting that they can’t get passports out of Ghana, because of the ‘flight risk’……they don’t return.                                                                                       –Dow, who is also president of the SE club is looking into the possibility of growing it into an Hispanic club.  The state of civic clubs is dwindling, so it’s a good thing that we are Optimists.

THE PROGRAM
Mr. Garrelts gave an exuberant & lengthy intro for the speaker(s), Phillip Cosby and his wife Cathy. Phillip is Exec Director and Cathy is Program Director of “National Coalition for the Protection of Children & Families”. Phillip’s background includes being a passionate pastor after serving 22 yrs in the army. His wife Cathy is a retired police/detective public servant. Of course they are good friends of the Garrelts. This church based org works to “Advance the truth of biblical sexuality”. They work in 8 cities addressing mostly church audiences and lobbying local and state audiences about “sex being Gods idea and only experienced through marriage”. They protest to stop or eradicate porn shops, gentlemen’s clubs, etc through obscenity laws, grand juries, zoning laws, and legislation. Their mission includes tackling online porn and they say 90% of that worldwide porn originates here in the US and they state that there is a direct link between on liune porn and the bulk of sexual crimes, rapes, murders, STDs, child molestations, young unwed mothers, etc. There is a bill for the 2010 Kansas session they have worked to get voted on and need our help when it comes up. HS 2144 Community Defense Act which changes how gentlemen’s clubs can operate, and from what Phil said it probably will close them down due to it’s affects. They believe we (churches and congregants) must “ recapture their prophetic zeal”  to battle this evil and stop the decay of society caused by sexuality that has run wild and contrary to biblical codes of conduct. Very interesting and thank you.

Publisher’s Note
Many thanks to Marc Kaplan for stepping in as editor since Dick was off to Olathe for a golf tournament.  I did get to sit with Jane and find out that their dog, Yaeger passed his test for Therapy Dog and they will be making their first visit to the Carpenter Children’s Place.

Even though she has Lupus, she is interested in helping the Optimist cause.                                                                                                         *Garry Dietsch reported that there were over 100 kids at OK Kid’s Day at Cheney Lake. We donated 70 rods and reels, and every kid got a t-shirt and a prize. The fire truck was a big hit too! The kids caught about 50 fish and had a great time.                                                                                                                                 *Drawing: SGT at Arms Don had Paul draw Joe Lang’s number for anything (within reason) of his choice.
THE PROGRAM
Home security….Car safety…..Identity theft…..Fraud alert…..and suggestions for victims!        Our speaker was unable to be here, notifying Paul the previous evening, and Paul was prepared, again coming through for Optimists (a lesson for all). Using his knowledge from Protection One, he presented a complete education on what can happen and what to do about it. A Security Freeze is a way to protect your credit, just call 888-909-8872 to guide you. For information about the identity theft report, go to www.ftc.gov/idtheft   Paul especially talked about what you shouldn’t do. Don’t leave ANTHING visible in your car, roll your windows ALL the way up, keep your car alarm keys next to your bed, test your security system often, and Floyd added ‘keep your shakey flashlight and mobile phone away from credit cards’. In fact Francis added that flashlight is a ‘tubular device to store dead batteries’.  If you encounter a driver with road rage, don’t drive to your home!  A scam also is happening daily with calls and letters telling you that you car warranty is expiring. Don’t fall for any of these schemes, including that $15,000,000 that you can claim for only $500.00. Paul handed out four sheets of valuable information. So much information….if something bad happens to you like you lose your credit cards, or you see a person peeking in your window………call Paul.
Your editor will be in KC next Wednesday.

UNSUNG HEROES
What a great morning!  With eight honorees, guests from the Breakfast Club and the West club, Ron AND Mark Stever, Dr Dan back in the fold, The Vice Mayor of Wichita Scott Moore, Lynn Gilkey and her husband, and light fingered Don Kutilek, the joint was packed. Only one member showed up at Spears, but he made it to Botanica in time for breakfast!  Paul Garrelts did outstanding work in planning and presenting an inspiring program. {It turns out that JD and Mark Stever are preparing to bike across Kansas beginning June 6} Ron and Dawn prepared the perfect program, and Chuck has already sent the pictures to all.
After Tom Garrelts blessed our breakfast and led the flag salute, Paul began by introducing the many guests, and then introducing Joe Voss to honor Claire Dillard. Claire introduced  Sandy, John, Kathleen and her Bishop Carrol counselor and former member of our club Lloyd Robinson. Claire has overcome an auditory learning disability with faith and a strong compass to exceed in her school work.                                                                                                                                John Strunk talked about Claire’s friend since grade school Alaina Thom.  Alaina introduced Mike, Linda, Nathan, Justin, Ellen, and her counselor Janet Neville.  Alaina was adopted at birth, but Amy her birth mother was in attendance.  Through many hardships, Alaina always gives 100%!                                                                                                                                               Tom Garrelts presented Briana Baldwin a North High student. Briana was sent to a foster home after her mother died early. She introduced dad Steven and brother Joshua, and is determined to be the first in her family to attend college. Her counselor Jan Knabe says that she has fire and determination as she volunteers and tutors. She has also began a AVID, a  Advancement Visual Individual Development program.                                                                          Garry Dietsch introduced North High senior class president Christa Martinez.  After being in foster care, she was adopted by her grandmother ,and she lives with her aunt Gail. Her counselor Lorrie Schoonover said that ATTITUDE is what set Christa apart, and she has started a special program.                                                                                                                                                                  Mike McComber said that NE Magnet junior Adriana Duran has overcome the tragedy of her sister being murdered. She is VP of her class, very involved with the YWCA, and she is an inspiration to all.                                                                                                                                                    Dawn Dunagan’s  Unsung Hero NE Magnet senior Chelsie Nicholson after many trips to the doctor to try to find out about her constant pain, discovered she had Lupus! Unable to attend school, kept up her school work at home. Finally back in school, and her counselor Dan Manion said she loves school.  Dawn was exceptional in her praise of Chelsie.
Young and vibrant 92 year old Irv Sullivan presented Northwest senior Megan Morgan. She introduced her counselor Michelle Hoffman, asst. principal Mr. Rush, and friend Quinton Parks. Megan, homeless for a spell now has her own apartment, works making $200 a week, involved in the DECCA  and the BRIDGES program, and plans to have her own café some day.        J.D. Frederick was excited to introduce Northwest junior Brad Luthe. Excited? Yes because Brad was a bundle of enthusiasm. After introducing his friend Autumn, his grandpa and mom,  and his counselor Kenya Tibbetts, Brad began to tell everyone to be positive with attitude. Brad almost committed suicide a few years ago, until he found out that his depression was caused by a mental illness. When he was younger a social worker told him that he wasn’t going anywhere! NOW he has a 3.3 GPA, tutors others, AND is a National motivational speaker. He said ‘ya know the Toby Keith song HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW?........ Well?
Asst. City Manager Scott Moore, here for his third year in a row, expressed his admiration for all our Unsung Heroes.                                                                                                                                          Lynn Gilkey also added that her organization CLASS could be of some help.                                                             Paul Garrelts was elegant in his closing remarks reading THE WINDS OF FATE.
All recited the Optimist Creed to close this inspiring morning. Thanks to all involved.

THE MEETING
Rev. Tom blessed and led.                                                                                                                                                *The president announced that the Cultural Moment is back by semi-popular demand: You might be a redneck if: Your main business worry is ‘law enforcement’!  And your spouse’s brass knuckles set of the security alarm at the airport.                                                                                    *The JRf party was a rousing success thanks to the Kirklands, Mike Macomber,  JohnStrunk, Gaye, Donna, and others. Mike even told one of the residents that he would look forward to meeting him when he returns to ‘life. The kid said ‘No you don’t!’  Whoa!                                                *’Pete’ reports that Doc is slowly recovering, and promises to attend the Unsung Heroes program.   Also it is reported that Margie has returned to work after recovering from a stroke.      *Jay and Ralph were seen at breakfast on Tuesday morning!  Our meeting is WEDNESDAY!           *We were happy to see that Floyd has returned from the RIVER, but he plans to return to the RIVER in 4 weeks.                                                                                                                                              Guests: a five year old (Irene) and a 2 year old (Daisy), grandchildren of Jane, visiting from Steamboat Springs. Jane tells the true story of purchasing a couple chicks at Atwoods, and over hearing a young boy telling his friends that those were ‘chicken nuggets’!                                 *Don reported that Victory in the Valley’s appreciation letter for the $474.35 raised by Jane’s bucket and Stan’s efforts at bingo. By the way our next to the last bingo raised $165.80 thanks to John Ferguson.                                                                                                                                               *Sgt at Arms Don had past president, past Lt Gov, past Governor Chuck Mansfield draw Our guest speaker’s number for the Spear’s gift certificate.
THE PROGRAM
Former Communities in School’s board member Dwayne Shannon introduced CIS Executive Director Mary Galvan. Dwayne was on the committee to find a new Director and agreed that Mary was the best of many, even though she would be moving from the private sector to the non-profit arena. Mary said that CIS is the fifth largest youth serving organization in the nation, and number one in documented dropout prevention. As 7000 students drop out daily in the US, we lose about one third of our youth to the streets. CIS is committed to not duplicating services, as they have Site Coordinators (capacity builders) at each school site. CIS and it’s Reality University are so successful that the banking industry is helping to fund to take it nationwide, because it teaches high school students financial responsibility. The program has teachers ask them where they want to be when they are 26, then assign them a occupation and a checkbook with a monthly income based on their grades. Then CIS takes over and let’s them go to each of 14 booths to spend and save. What a ‘wakeup call’!  CIS goes to where it is needed, even Holy Savior. 20% of donations, including grants and the United Way funds go directly to the cause.  Mary also noted that there #1 fundraiser is Evening on the Bayou in Old Town on June 27th, and she invited us all to attend. What a wonderful organization for us to be acquainted.

THE MEETING
Tom Garrelts opened with a prayer and led the Flag Salute.  Marc mentioned that the blessing  should have been given by our guest speaker.                                                                                       *Guest Katie Todd (daughter of former member Bob Todd) with CIS, promoting the Star Luncheon, Reality U., and the OK Kid’s Day at Cheney Lake.                                                                        *Oratorical Contest: Chuck reported that BOTH our winners took first in the Region, and now on to the District in Manhattan April 25.                                  YEA!                                                                 *Simon Volunteer Fair: The Mall was packed, and Paul reported some interest as he, Dawn, John, and others were manning our booth to extol the virtues of Optimist membership.                 *John Strunk reintroduced Larry Booze who told us about the Cheney Lakes Association hosts OK Kid’s Day on the 25th .  9-10 register, 10:30 Ken Lockwood demonstrates birds of prey, lunch, fishing, demonstrations by the Cheney Fire Dept., a Fish and Game biologist, etc. All free, and every kid gets a prize!                                                                                                                                                                                     *Don had a member who every Spring gets going!  Garry Dietsch drew Francis Buckman’s number for a large autographed copy of Dick and Jane.
THE PROGRAM
Jane introduced recently retired Rev. H. Patrick Malone (I know him at Pat, our handicaps are the same). Father Malone, after a stint in the navy was ordained in 1969. And after missions with Christ the King, Our Lady of Lourdes in Pittsburg, Barquisimeto Venezuela, St. Teresa in Hutch, St. Agnes in Castleton, Our Lady of Guadalupe in Newton, St Mary in Derby, all before he was named pastor of Holy Savior in 1992. After retiring last year, he took on the leadership of the Catholic Relief Services, and he is busier now than he ever was, and he loves it. He mentioned the movie Slumdog Millionaire to point out the poverty in the world. It is sad to know that 30,000 kids die (daily?) of malnutrition and contaminated water.  CRS was established in 1943 as a response to the needs of refuges, and now they serve in 100 countries. It is easy to proclaim the gospel rarely using words! 94% of all donations go directly to the cause, and how rare is that? The main purpose of CRS is to build solidarity. Father Pat asks ‘ How do you help people around the world?’  We could tell that he has a genuine passion for young people. Put your faith into Action brochures were passed to everyone. Thanks to Jane and Father Par Malone.

THE MEETING
A beautiful opening prayer and Flag salute led by Tom Garrelts.                                                                    *Good to have Jay and Ralph back….and ‘Pete’ who explained that Doc would return with warmer weather. We have missed Margie recently because of health problems, and now we find that she suffered a stroke last week. She will fully recover though.
*Chuck reported that at the CCDHH contest last week, our female winner won, and the boy was 2nd.
*The president (Don) has put ‘the cultural moment’ on hold until further notice.                                     *Jane reported an additional $52 collected pennies at a time was given to Victory in the Valley.              *Dwayne reported of a former member Harry Frazier’s passing, and his gift for fund raising.
*Sgt at Arms Don had us guess what member was a downhill champion skier, cross country biker, tops in his class handball player, current WSU student, part-time auctioneer. Wasn’t a no-brainer, but we did guess J.D., and he drew 2 tickets that happened to be our guest speakers.

THE PROGRAM
Lynn Gilkey is a survivor of childhood abuse, teen rape, and 15 years of drug abuse or self-medicating as she put it! She brought her husband David and one of her NW High School CLASS ladies (Amber) for support.  A 1982 East High Blue Ace grad who almost lost her life has turned her life into helping girls who could be on the same path from which she recovered. As she sat in the police car, and knowing she was facing ‘a lot of years’ in prison, and remembering her lawyer telling her that he might get her sentence reduced from 15 to 10 years in prison, a new serious prayer was formed. This time she decided that she was going to dedicate her life to teaching young girls how to make better choices.  Seeing two judges in our audience brought back memories. Also when she entered the courtroom handcuffed to Jonathon Carr woke her up to the complete seriousness of her situation.  Thanks to a creative judge, who sentenced her to 18 months probation which if violated, her husband David would do the time and vice versa. Lynn and David have been ‘clean’ for 8 years and married for 4.  She has started, under the umbrella of the Urban League, CLASS (Caring Ladies Assisting Students to Succeed) mainly teaching love yourself first! At this time she goes to four high schools totaling about 80 students. Finding that some student haven’t even opened a bible, she knew her calling. And now Lynn finds her speaking ability has given her the opportunity to speak before large groups (even in NY City). One such group at the Marriot an attorney offered to help get ‘felon’ expunged from her record. She presented Amber from NW, who spoke with a new found confidence about how much Lynn (her second mom) means to her. Becoming a part of the Sisterhood Group helps her and others come out of the darkness to have dreams as big as the sky.  As she says Miss Lynn is her Angel.

THE MEETING
Irv  began with a blessing and flag salute.                                                                                                          I think we missed the ‘CULTURAL MOMENT’, or maybe I was listening to a couple other conversations while president Don was on the mic’. Reminds me of when I visited the Kansas House proceedings a couple weeks ago.  On when I questioned one Representative, he said ‘the speaker of the House wasn’t talking about anything important!’                                                                                                         *The Thompsons and Minters were missing, and we had fun anyway.                                                                                              *Dwayne and Dottie Shannon celebrated being married 15 happy years on the 24th. Actually Dwayne said they have been married 58 years!!                                                                                               *The board reported that there will be only three more Bingo nights!  John reported we made $128 and Jane gave $422 to our Childhood Cancer Campaign. The money was raised by Stan asking for donations during bingo, and it goes directly to Victory in the Valley.                                                                                                                                                                    Drawing: Don had president Don draw Gaye’s number for the custom embroidery on whatever, and she promptly donated it to Nguyen Le our 2nd place Essay Contest winner.

THE PROGRAM
Dawn introduced our 2nd place Essay Contest winner, Nguyen Le and her parents Dennis and Qu.  The title for all essays was The Power of Youth!  Nguyen a bright East High student who aspires to go on in microbiology,  read her entry, emphasizing that youth is the prime age to learn.  Youth is the age marked by impatience, rebellion, and impulsiveness. However, if you can shift from a pessimistic to an optimistic perspective for just a second, you can see infinite potentials waiting to be released from every youth. Sometimes you may feel as if problems will enshroud the world, and the light of a brighter future seems to dim with each passing second. Rest assure that the seemingly dimming light will never fade away, because our legion of youth will light our way into the future, without fail (or maybe with a few along the way).

We passed around a thank you from the JV center for Valentine celebration. They love us. We thanked our members who helped at the St. Pat’s party. We also shared our appreciation for those who helped with our in house Oratorical judging and timing.
Fergy (John) told us we had about 131 players at last Bingo and made about $ 128 after a late purchase of unneeded pull tabs, so we really made much more.
**A special board meeting after the regular one address the challenge of too few Optimists to continue Bingo.  A 30 day notice to cease Bingo was signed and mailed to Tom Wagle.  We will need to support 3 more games with only Optimist workers.  Your help is needed.

                                                    SPEAKER(S) CORNER
Mike McComber brought Bob Todd’s brother Jim to address us about the Crime Stoppers annual “Scholastic Day for Youth”. They service about 130 kids and this program needs a bit of funding with lunches running about $ 15 per youth. ( Seems like a lot to me). This happened at the end of April and they address many of the subjects in our schools that plague our youth. They are working on a hot line for youth to report problem kids anonymously and a safe website for that also. Good program for youth. Thank you both.

Garry Dietsch introduced the scheduled speaker(s). Bruce Harris who owns the A-OK pawn shop empire and is very involved with charities, youth, and not for profits, and Kelly Peters, the area director of the “ Kansas Childrens Service  League”. Bruce has a very interesting story of his own survival from near death that lit his interest in working with kids. He started from humble beginnings and worked for free to get his business education and legs before becoming so successful he just purchased both of Dick George’s pawn shops. He loves serving the public and that drives his fine work ethic.
The main speaker brought by Bruce through Garry,  was Kelly. The KCHS is the offspring of two charities each over 100 year old that merged to serve families and children where abuse and neglect exist or are projected to occur. Throughout their 113 year span of service they offer direct case work service to the more than 40,000 Kansas children each year who suffer under this plague. About 6,000 kids enter foster care in Kansas each year. Most of these are ages 8 and up and wait for you to adopt them. They work with more often with moms ages 25 and up with kids already that are  again pregnant and wish to give up this next baby, (surprisingly not teen moms here). She reviewed signs that indicate probable current or future neglect and abuse. They offer a hotline open 24/7 for contact for dealing with anger, abuse, alcohol, drugs, and other issues.

THE MEETING
Irv Sullivan, only one day after his 92nd birthday (we did sing for him) gave his thankful blessing for the beautiful morning, and he led the flag salute.                                                                                 *The Prez’ cultural moment:  You know you are a redneck if: When the Roto-Rooter man comes to your house and asks ‘What is that smell??’, or You have a recipe for catfish lasagna, or you like corndogs for breakfast.                                                                                                                  *Don had Marc explain why our waitress Shannon gave him a gift of stuff that would benefit from his ineptitude.  Included a ‘sippy’ coffee cup and a bib!                                                                                                        *John reported another great evening of profit at bingo! $542, and we had to pay out $100 for help because we didn’t have enough OPTIMIST volunteers. No bingo this Friday, but we need lots of help on the 13th.                                                                                                                         *As we speak, Don is meeting with Cal McMillan to co-ordinate Unsung Heroes for the Riverfest parade float.                                                                                                                                             *Past governor Chuck asked for us to attend the Regional contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. It will be at the Extension Center or 4H Bldg on 21st St. at 1PM March 28.                         *Pete had past winner Donna draw Dawn’s number for the neat surprise prize that Helen brought.

THE PROGRAM
Our CCDHH contestants had to cancel the night before, not leaving much time to plan, but Helen, not to be deterred, came to the rescue. On one of Chuck and Helen Governor’s trips, they happened to be in North Platte, Nebraska where they made acquaintance with R.P. Smith.  Who is that you ask? Well, just a 4th generation cattle rancher with a flare for writing poetry.  He published a book entitled A RIDE THROUGH RHYME.  Cowboy poems. We were lucky enough to hear three narrated by a great enthusiastic, animated Helen James: >Dad, you’re a pretty good friend<   >Bugs<   >Ranch Romance<      Although we could have listened to Helen read them all, we didn’t and Don closed the meeting a little early. Marc had to get back to work.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR
March   4---CCDHH (Communications Contest for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing). Come early, breakfast will be over by 7:30AM as the contest must start by then. No one may enter or leave while the contestants are presenting their  ‘For me Optimism is……’.  We have six presentations.                                                                                                                                                        March 11---Same ‘deal’ for our next Oratorical Contest.                                                                                 March 18---Garry Deitsch brings Bruce Harris. A true local Rags to Riches story. Wish I could be there, but I will be in Las Vegas with his second and third in command. Bruce purchased The Pawn Shop from the George family.                                                                                                   March 25---Dawn Dunagan always steps up with an interesting program

THE MEETING
The good Reverend Tom Garrelts remembered to bless our food and lead the Pledge.                   *The prez’ Cultural Moment: You know you are a Redneck if: You have more oil on your baseball cap than in your car, or ‘potted’ meat on a saltine is your favorite meal.                          *Irv Sullivan is having a birthday on March 3rd. Obviously 92 is the ‘new’ 60!                                                    *Bingo: John reported that after the many payouts we still made $550.42! Great!                         *The Riverfest:  We have signed up to put a float in the parade. It will be great fun with potentially 32 Unsung Heroes on board, plus many of us.  Do you know anything about decorating a flatbed?                                                                                                                                                       *Past Governor Chuck Mansfield just back from the convention brought us new patches for our ‘overpatched’ banner. We averaged over $20 per member donated to OI.                                         *Drawing:  More of us need to buy more chances for the drawing. I think donna puts sticky stuff on her ticket. ‘Pete’ had our past Gov. draw and he drew Donna’s number for the third week in a row. If you trade tickets with her, you might have a chance.

THE PROGRAM
The always highly anticipated Dr David Farnsworth view of the world, specifically Gitmo!  Francis did not give his 4 hour biographical background, but just suffice to say that Dr. Farnsworth, a retired Political Science professor, has often been asked to brief ranking officers at the Air War College. He did say that our relations with Cuba are quietly improving. He is so familiar with the names of all foreign leaders and their views that it is difficult to keep up with him. What is Guantanamo (sp) Bay? A country, a colony…. Who knows? There is no international law there. President McKinley gavge Cuba independence in 1902 to rescue our little brown brothers”. What bother Dr Farnsworth is that the networks just don’t give us the facts of what is going on. Actually I can’t describe here what all was discussed: Haiti is the poorest country. G20, Romania and Bulgaria were the 26th and 27th countries to join the European Union. DeGaul wanted France out of NATO.  He had fun when the Soviet Union collapsed, because it split up into 15 countries and Russia is STILL the largest country in the world (before 8 million square miles, now only 6 ½ million square miles). He said keep an eye on the election in Iran.  So much in such a short time, but time for questions from Jane, Don, Jay, Gaye, Mike, and Dawn.

FEBRUARY 18, 2009
Feb 25------We wait all year to hear what is UP in the world, and this is THE day when Dr David Farnsworth fills us in. Dr. Farnsworth has taught generals on world affairs, and so much more.                                                                                                                                                                                 Mar  4------Either Oratorical contest                                                                                                                  Mar 11-----the other contest. We need a couple volunteer judges for both.
Mar 14----- St Patty’s Party at the Juvenile Res Facility  1-3pm
Mar 18----  Garry Dietsch
Mar 25----  Dawn Dunagan

THE MEETING
After 30 minutes of camaraderie, Tom Garrelts blessed our morning, & led the Flag salute.     *The Cultural moment: You know you are a redneck if: your husband has spray painted your car’s upholstery, or your living room sofa came from a Chevy.                                                                     *Guests: Taylor Levins and Michelle Walsh brought a new author, 9 year old Adam Walsh who was promoting his first ‘book’ The Adventure of a Rabbit and a Cow.
* Lt Governor Dow Summers madehis quarterly visit.                                                                   *Don’t miss John F’s Anniversary on the 22nd and birthday on the 24th next Tuesday.                          *Bingo: There were 141 players & we made $545!                                *The JRF Valentine’s party was a success as we had 8 volunteers to interact.  Be ready for the JRF St Pat’s party on March 14th.   The more volunteers, the more fun!
*Drawing: Don had past Governor Chuck Mansfield draw Donna Kozera’s number (2 weeks in a row) for the surprise from John Browning.

THE PROGRAM
John Browning introduced Mark Keene with Keene Insight (mark@keeneinsight.net)  A 38
year old ‘doctor’ of finance, and a bundle of enthusiasm. John read off the many accolades
that Mark has received already. Enough so that me thinks he is destined to enter politics
some day. Mark emphasized that you need to be diligent investigating into where to invest.
Do your homework, know what you are doing! He also said we as a nation of people need
to have ‘core’ values based on our Constitution, and live below your means. Have F.I.R.E.!
F-Faith  I-Integrity  R-Responsibility  E-Excellence.   Being the first one to work and the
last one to leave is not as good as ‘work less and do it right’. He teaches the one third
philosophy: Give a third, Save a third, and Spend a third. You don’t establish credit by
having credit cards, but by being debt free! Have written goals, develop a strategy. Do you
spend more time planning a vacation than you do planning your finances? His plan should
be our plan: to make the World a better place> Fix relationships, Fix you (health-
education), Fix your career, fix your finances, and pass it on.
Editor’s note: Mark has great ideas that can not be disputed. Now who is going to fix Government?  Mark Keene         Thank you John for a terrific program.

THE MEETING
Tom Garrelts prayed for good things to happen, and he led our Flag salute.                                                    *The Cultural Moment: You just might be a Redneck if: You’ve ever shot a deer from inside your house, or your deerstand has an address!                                                                                        *No bingo last week, but we need helpers this Friday.                                                                                *Thursday Feb 12:  Georges, Bundys, and Debbie Kirkland will be at Metro Blvd for Reality U.      *Pres Don announced that our board has approved funds to have a float in the Riverfest parade touting UNSUNG HEROES. Other clubs will be invited to participate with us. FUN times *Gaye Irwin was presented the District quarterly Award for Optimist of the Quarter. A long overdue deserved award!                                                                                                                                     *Temp Sgt-at-Arms ‘Pete’ drew Donna Kozera’s name for the secret envelope.

THE PROGRAM
Joe Bribriesca said no introduction is needed for our Mayor Carl Brewer, who brought some help as he spoke to us about Wichita’s economy. Director of Finance Kellie Carpenter and Budget Officer Mark Manning were on hand to confirm his words. Carl is also a member of the Northeast Optimist Club, so his words were naturally Optimistic even as he numbered the recent aircraft layoffs. We are positioned for a ‘fast’ recovery. After a few ‘What is an Optimist’ jokes, he got down to business outlining a ‘bounce-back’ plan. The airlines have many backlogs to fill----in time. Meanwhile some are going to a shorter work week preventin further layoffs. Even with a $500,000,000 city budget, there is still a deficit, but the staff will work harder and smarter (Kellie smiled in agreement). Our Mayor has asked our new City Manager to postpone hiring, make the labor contract competitive, and look for ways to refinance debt. The Mayor added that he will not accept any increases in wages. He said the City and United Way of the Plains will establish a Lay-off Center with help for those effected. And we will anticipate Federal assistance for ‘shovel-ready’ projects.  Mayor Brewer emphasized  that our new City Manager Bob Layton is likeable, focused, detailed, and already has spent sleepless nights working. We want to invest in DT to have a vibrant downtown, it is the ‘HEART’ of the city!   Not to forget that our mayor has been appointed as Chair of the Large Cities Council for the National League of Cities. There were many questions by Don, Jay, Joe, John Strunk, John Browning, and of course, Marc.

Have you noticed that our Optimist banner is FULL!  Are we getting to many awards or do we need a new banner?

THE MEETING
Tom Garrelts gave the Optimist prayer for guidance before leading the Flag salute.   THE Cultural Moment: You know that you are a Redneck if: ‘You ask for Lay-a-way at the Dollar Store’ or ‘Your shower runs cold when your neighbor flushes’.
*We missed the Minters, Thompsons, and Walpoles, and especially Mike Macomber because our speaker has recently adopted two children from Russia.
*Bingo: John reported a profit of $98.95 from a crowd of 138.  Thanks to Mike, Clark, Stan, and one other.  No bingo this Friday.                                                                                                        *Communities in Schools Reality University is so great for high school sophomores, and we will have a opportunity again Feb 12 at Metro and March 10 at Valley Center. We are in charge of the Transportation booth. If you know cars, volunteer, If you know kids, volunteer, If you know anything, volunteer.                                                                                                                                                                         *The special drawing: 3 or 4 folks won the 4 tickets to WSU women’s basketball game this Friday. They all said that Marc could have them. The special $2 drawing for the Vornado heater went to The ‘good reverend’ Tom Garrelts.

THE PROGRAM

Marc Kaplan met Karl Peterjohn early in Wichita, because Marc has always been politically active. No one expected Karl to win the County Commissioner election, not even Karl. When asked what it was like being a Commissioner: ‘My jokes are funnier now’, and ‘my phone calls are returned more promptly’ .  His second meeting was this morning, and he will focus on three issues: Why $2.7 million to improve the Forensic Science center, Why$50 million or $125,000 per bed for an addition to the jail, and where the State’s budget of $1.6 billion is diverted. He and a small group, including the county manager are looking at facilities in other counties that may be able to house inmates. Time and travel costs must be weighed before a decision is made.                                                                                                                                                             Karl pointed out that our ‘recession proof’ economy is actually a year behind, and we may be hit even harder than the rest of the country. When talking about our growing dependence, he says the chain of dependence is going all the way to Washington with unintended consequences. Karl would like a Taxpayer’s network of potential expenditures on-line so we can look up what is going on. Don, Dwayne, Marc, JD, and George had questions to run Karl late for his County Commission meeting. Susan Estes heads up Americans for Prosperity, formerly Ks Taxpayer’s Network.

THE PROGRAM

It’s not Maude Carpenter’s place,  IT’S Carpenter Place! Shellee Morrison is the CEO/Director of Development, and she is enthused about the importance of their work. They began in 1942, and are located on 13 ½ acres at 13th and Meridian. They serve all girls ranging in age from 10 years old to 19 staying from 6 months to 3 years. Shellee says Carpenter Place is faith based and their focus is on Residential Treatment, rebuilding families and restoring lives.  Some of the girls are transitioning out of foster care. They attend public schools, but are looking for alternatives.  How can we help? The Children’s Charity Classic is Monday April 27 at Sand Creek, and this is their major fundraiser as all their funds are from private donations.    Might be a good time to get a team together.  Thank you Kirklands for this fine program.

THE PROGRAM
Mike Macomber introduced our long lost former president and long time Deputy DA, Kim Parker from Jefferson County, Kansas. It turns out that Mike grew up a little in that county also. Kim moved from Ozaki to Moran, Ks when she was eight.  Kim is ready to settle a little now that she has Amy enrolled at KU. For a graduation present she took her to Europe where they visited seven countries traveling by rail. Kim made it be known that she loves her work, but hates the politics of it.  She focused her talk on two subjects: 1. She attended the State child‘s death review, a board of 12. There are between 800 and 900 child’s (under 18) deaths a year, and each has to be reviewed for cause and blame.  She is especially passionate regarding young people suicides. Such hopelessness, and how do we fix this problem?  That is why she appreciates what we do to give children HOPE. In the next few months she will be trying five murder cases involving children under four years of age. In every case the child was in the care of someone with no bond or emotional ties to them. Kim asks us to be involved with the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) led by Diana Shunn who spoke to us a few months ago.                               Kim was asked to give us the IS EVERYBODY HAPPY yell to finish. Is everybody H.A.P.P.Y.?
Don ended the meeting by challenging us to ask ourselves: WHY DID YOU JOIN THIS OPTIMIST CLUB INITIALLY? And then think about supporting our events for youth.

THE PROGRAM
Floyd was proud to introduce Kelli Hoobler, his Mississippi traveling partner’s daughter, who is the Wichita State Cleerleading coach. She was a SE cheerleader, an Allstar her senior year with a reward of a trip to London (been 4 times since). After 2 years at Coffyville, she graduated from WSU. She taught art to 8th graders at Brooks middle school, and is a member of the Universal Cheerleaders Association.  During her career she has had2 broken ankles and dislocated her shoulder 3 times.  In her travels, Kelli works more with the coaches now. WSU won the National contest in 07’, but the award was revoked because of an ineligible student. The next year, they started from scratch with new folks. That coach resigned, and Kelli took the reins this year. She emphasizes safety. New rules just don’t let us see some of the more exciting routines of the past. She will try to recruit guys from Junior colleges and girls from high school. And now, already they are headed to Orlando with a new squad for the semifinals competition. She emphasized to us that cheerleading is not a sport, but and entertainment! She only gets $24,000 a year for everyone’s scholarships, so money is an issue.   J.D. found out where they get ‘some’ money, as when they throw little balls to the crowd, one of the girls ‘hand delivers’ one up to Floyd’s seat. Debbie Kirkland volunteered to have her church group begin working on a quilt for J.D. to auction. Kelli doesn’t do well with spare time: she is working on her Masters, teaching, coaching, and planning a wedding.
