THE PAST
The Installation Banquet was a success! 31 folks enjoyed a wonderful southern dinner, fellowship, pictures, a fond farewell for Don (I learned that the Vulcan’s foot is six feet long, ten feet high, and weighs six TONS! [you should-a been there]). Installation of the new slate of Board members, and concluding with a rousing, optimistic for the future speech by our new president. We also found out that Garry has not been getting the bulletin on line! Barbara has been deleting them, because Garry does not use the computer!!!
THE FUTURE
October 7-----Kristi Oberg, Director of Development for the Kansas Humane Society has been invited by Joe Voss to tell us about their facility. October 14----Judge Joe Bribriesca is concerned about the H1V1 virus that is spreading, and he even had some first hand knowledge. He has invited an expert on the subject. October 20----Byo-lunch board meeting 12:07PM-City Church 2634 Amidon. October 21----John Browning October 28----Francis Buckman Novemver 4—Bob Bundy---get ready for something special.
THE MEETING
Mike Berry gave our appropriate blessing, and Floyd added that we pray for officer Etheridge’s family. The Flag Salute. *2009-2010 president Tom Garrelts began by asking JD to give us the daily news: He did! 82 degrees today, North’s girl’s volleyball team beat West’s, and Toyota has recalled 3.8 million cars. *Past president Don and past Governor Chuck installed board members Donna and Gaye who just arrived the night before from a sorority party in Seattle. Donna related the experience of riding a limo with 11 sisters to the Space Needle. *Dwayne asked us to continue to support the Communities in Schools Reality University, especially at North High October 22-23. Details to follow. *Gaye reintroduced rodeo princess 10 year old Chrissy May, and her mother Claudia. Chrissy gave a short speech about her two friends, both horses, Grandpa (who is gone now) and Buttercup. She handed out FREE tickets to the two day rodeo at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson…this weekend. *Irv told a joke: George and Jane went to the dogs last week. *Do had Joe Voss draw Helen’s number for a $10 certificate for at Town and Country.
THE PROGRAM
Before introducing Floyd and Linda Doc Thompson told of a Lion that ate a whole bull, who promptly moved to the top of the mountain and roared! A hunter shot him dead. Moral: When full of bull, keep mouth shut! Stating that he had some things in common with Floyd (something about a deep river and deep ocean, and all male crew compared to a female crew) then doc introduced the Captain and First mate of Tumbleweed. Of course, first Linda needed to show one wedding picture of her daughter and our own Lance. Complete with Linda’s video and Floyd’s narration, we traveled on the tumbleweed from Jacksonville all the way to Charleston. Along the way we heard about St John’s River, Nassau Sound, St Andrews Sound, Jeckle Sound, St Simon Sound, and Vernadeen Beach. At Brunswick, Ga Floyd looked all over for at least one bowling ball, and didn’t find one. On the Little Mud River they encountered millions of big ‘dumb’ green headed flies that just sat there to be vacuumed up. Then Kilkenny Creek and Hell’s Gate where when docked the tides can swing 10 feet. There they saw Osprey (Sea Eagle) and their nests. On the Thunderbolt, Ga. where they encountered floating cement docks. Then Savanna where we saw a suspect picture of Linda with Paula Dean (looked real). So they ate at her place. Charleston had a mega dock, and Floyd found out that is for mega yachts (120 foot). Notes: NBA star Jerry Stackhouse has a big yacht (Gametime) and a smaller one (Hafttime). We saw a picture of the MUSE a yacht owned by a tobacco rich attorney, and you can take seven of your friends out on it for a week for under $100,000. Other places seen were Paris Island, Bufort, S.C., and Walter & the Blue Eyed Horse. They will head back out this Spring for more adventure. I think Jane and I will meet them someplace on this leg.
Your public servants serve you right. Adlai Stevenson (1900-1965)

September 29******THIS Tuesday is our Installation Banquet at Rolling Hills Country Club. BE there at 6:30 for some social interaction, and we’ll eat at 7:00, but the real funs begins shortly after as Don moves on to a ‘higher calling’, and Tom takes over for the new year. The Optimist year is October through September.
September 30---------The third leg the great Gulf Coast Intracoastal Waterway adventure. Floyd and Linda present thanks to Doc Daniel Thompson’s invitation.
October 7---------Joe Voss October 14--------Judge Joe Bribriesca October 21--------John Browning October 28--------Francis Buckman is trying to think of something scarey, maybe Dr Farnsworth has some current political views!
THE MEETING
The good reverend Tom Garrelts began with a thanks to all those that serve, and thanks also for a wonderful day. Then he led out Flag Salute. Our Lt Gov Dow Summers installed Don Kirkland as Zone 7’s new Lt governor, even gave him the pin! *Maybe the last….maybe not cultural moment: You might be a Redneck if: That oil stain on your driveway was once a BBQ sandwich, or You can’t spell your name without looking at your belt buckle. *Gaye Erwin introduced Chrissy May and her dad, Jeff. 10 year old Chrissy is the Central Plains Rodeo’s Little Miss, and in future years she could become a Princess , and then Queen of the rodeo. The Pageant is this weekend at the Hutchinson Fair Grounds. Many of us bought raffle tickets for a beautiful quilt shown by Gaye. *Sherilda Jane AKA ‘Pete’ Thompson drew president Don’s number for the second week in a row for the pie (provided by Irv from last week) and our speaker’s book LEROY THE UGLY DOG.
THE PROGRAM
Jane George and Yeager George introduced Janice Ronald and her Certified Therapy Dog Kirby (a perfect gentleman all morning). Janice told us that Therapy Dog International began in the mid-fifties, and she has certified over 400 dogs in the last 12 years….Yeager was probably number 378. She own five certified dogs herself. TDI dogs must be able to not bite, have good manners, learn to ‘leave it’ when told, Stay, be able to be calm when there are strange noises like crutches or pans hitting the floor, and not get excited when around other animals! One of her dogs, a 13 year old Australian Wire Hair Graffon, is the basis for her book LEROY THE UGLY DOG. The Family dog Training and Behavioral Center is at Waggin’ Tail Ranch in Valley Center. She spoke of the dog’s visits to hospitals, care homes, and children’s homes, and of the wonderful things that can happen. They actually can improve a person’s health or bring a child out of their self inflicted shelter. Jane even told of a visit to the Spiritual Life Center while walking through the building, one patient in a wheelchair yelled ‘No dogs!’ Do not confuse Therapy Dogs with Service Dogs, they serve different purposes, and Therapy dogs only go where invited. There were many questions: Any dog can be trained—except maybe Chows, Dogs have to be at least one year old, pure bred dogs are not necessarily easier to train, etc. Thank you so much Jane and Janice.
Ed: “I’ve never seen a monument erected to a pessimist”….Paul Harvey

THE MEETING
Irv Sullivan read the now famous Reverend Wright prayer, and led the Flag salute. *The next to last Cultural moment reminded us of president Don. You might be a Redneck if: You have a Bud Lite Light over your dining room table, or You have a Pabst Blue Ribbon tap in your home. *No birthdays, no anniversaries, no bingo report, no kid’s activities, no Christmas trees sales, no fruitcake sales report, just getting ready for the ‘new’ regime. *Ron Eilers from the West club dropped by to promote the Optimist all club golf outing on the 10th at 1:00 PM, also promoted a kids fishing day. He talked with Garry afterwards to iron out details. Ron ALSO suggested that Jerry Taylor with the NBC annual tournament would like to show us around the stadium sometime *We voted on a dues increase, and not unlike congress when they vote for a salary increase….it passed without fanfare. *A drawing was held, and our president won with lucky ticket ‘one number past mine’ for the traditional redneck pie.
THE PROGRAM
SURPRISE! Irv Sullivan did not know it was his turn to present a program, but undaunted presented one of best programs of the year telling us about life in the 20’s and 30’s! He stopped his experiences just a couple years before I was born. Born 5 miles from Amarillo in 1917. He remembers vaudeville, and covered his eyes when John asked about dancing girls. They moved to Wichita in 1927, talked about cars ‘without drivers’, being a patrol boy at Kellogg School in the fifth grade, making 10 cents a week cashing in on bus tokens because he rode his bike. Then on to Hamilton where he worked for lunch, and made solid Walnut tables in shop. He attended WICHITA HIGH SCHOOL (later East when North High was built), and graduated in 1935! Irv worked at Kresses [which had 5 floors and 2 basements] unpacking dishware packed in straw {no air conditioning in 35’). He worked 6 days a week throwing baled cardboard boxes down a chute until he was finished. In 36’ Irv was a paperboy (re: Everything I learned about business was being a paperboy), delivering 13 times a week beginning at 3:30AM (don’t be late!) as customers paid 20 Cents a week for this service, and he had to go around and collect!! In the Fall of 40’ a Navy recruiter at the Lassen Hotel helped him beat the draft by one day, and in February of 40’ he was in the Navy. That was after his right hydro-something was fixed at the Wichita Hospital at Douglas and Seneca. Irv told us about how the Blue Laws killed Ackerman’s Island, about the Forum and the stock shows, about Hap Dumont starting the NBC Tournament, and about seeing Satchel Paige. Irv Sullivan finally graduated from a ‘good school’ Wichita University!“In times like these, it helps to recall that there have always been times like these” PAUL HARVEY
September 9, 2009
THE FUTURE
September 16---92 year old IRVING SULLIVAN (celebrated his 66th anniversary last month), but hasn’t informed us of this surprise program!
September 23---Jane George’s Therapy dog Yeager will make an appearance with the official Therapy Dog trainer Janice Arnold and her dog. Note: Spear’s management has approved. September 29---Big party! One time each year a new slate of officers is installed with new ideas, and a semi-roast of our ‘Redneck’ outgoing president…Banquet at Rolling Hills Country Club. What a fun time this will be! September 30---Dr Dan Thompson
October 7---Joe Voss is always topical
October 10---Optimist golf tournament at Echo Hills October 14---Judge Joe Bribriesca
THE MEETING
Irv’s blessing reminded us that we are examples for children, and then he led The Flag Salute. *President Don is ‘back’ with the cultural moment: You might be a Redneck if: You have ever plucked a nose hair with a pair of pliers, if you think truffles is a brand of potato chips! When traveling back from home through Northern Mississippi listening to Charlie Daniels and eating fried chicken livers, and he thought he was in heaven.
*On September 11 Jay and Ralph Minter celebrate their 68th!!
*Board meeting results: Lance Rappard was approved for membership. AND next Wednesday the 23rd we will vote to approve a modest raise in quarterly dues to cover increased OI dues and increased breakfast prices. *Sgt-at-Arms ‘pretty’ honest ‘Pete’ had tom draw Marc Kaplan’s number for the down payment on $100 prize from ‘Pete’!
THE PROGRAM
TUMBLEWEED ADVENTURES continues as ‘Pete’ introduced Floyd and Linda to describe Tumbleweed traversing the Gulf Coast Intracoastal Waterway up to Jacksonville, Florida. Jacksonville, by the way is a city of 2 ½ million and covers more square miles than any other city in the U.S.. With a map and big screen pictures this pair of adventurers made us jealous. They even spent a week in Stewart where previously Floyd spent a week at Chapman’s Marine School to learn how---- Now mind you they left Dempolis in February and reached Jacksonville in April, so there were too many adventures to list here, but some more ‘words’ will give you an idea: Muhamad Ali-gator, swing bridges, locks, sugarcane burning, anchor and ‘dingy’ to shore, 4:15AM missile launch from 50 miles away, tidal currents, Captain Hirams, Only North flowing river in the States-St John’s river, the new style bridge (lots of overhead cables), lighthouses, Oyster Creek Marina in St Augustine (interesting people), and Floyd now has a LIFETIME membership to any National Park. Cost him ten bucks! Next up (for us) Jacksonville to Lottsburg, Va. Which they traversed from May through June this year. Next year Lottsburg, New York, Canada, etc.
Ed note: “In America anyone can become president. That is one of the risks you take.” Adlai Stevenson (1900—1965)

THE MEETING
Irv reminded us that we have a great club, noticing last week that we had a father/son, two brother/sisters, and a few husband/wives in attendance. Appropriate prayer and Flag Salute followed. *Mike Macomber excitedly announced that he is engaged! Congratulations Julie. *Even though President Don was away, future president Tom had a new moral slant on the cultural moment. You might be a Redneck if: you bow your head in prayer, you put your hand over your heart during the Pledge and when the flag is presented. Tom also reminded us that on this day September 2 over 50 years ago Japan surrendered. They have found a better way. *Floyd presented Dwayne with a long lost picture of ‘Darling Dottie’, a WWII P-47. *Announcement: Former long time member Walt Byfield was diagnosed with Cancer. *Welcome new member Lance Rappard! Lance is married to WSU coach Kelli since May 9th. They are happe at 8019 Lakepoint Way #201, home phone 393-1769. Lance works with Dimensions Financial Services at 1625 N. Waterfront Parkway Ste. 150, phone 682-9398. He is a SE grad, likes golf and really likes KU sports. He is a church camp counselor, and mentor for USD 259. Welcome Lance, and thank you Floyd for introducing us to Lance. *Ralph and Jay found out they ‘do’ have heated seats in their new car, but when they pressed ‘rear defroster’ they didn’t work. Their anniversary is September 9th. *Preacher Tom encouraged us to be a volunteer, we are needed, and to be proud to be an Optimist! *Sgt-at-Arms Don had Gaye draw Clarks number for the homemade potato pouch (also good with rice in it to use as a warmer), and Jane won the sealed envelope. Dick had French Silk for lunch!
THE PROGRAM
Mike Macomber read off a long list of accomplishments of entrepreneur/businessman, former State Representative Dick Kelsey who is running for U.S. Congress. We are familiar with Dick and his Boys Ranch (thanks to Garry we supplied fishing gear there), and his pro life, strong National Defense, Fair tax advocate, and Limited Government stance. 13 grandchildren keep him in line, or maybe his 20 year friendship with Tom Garrelts helps. He remembers buying his Boys ranch from Camp Fellowship in 1990, and former DA Clark Owens sitting in his car checking out anything out of the ordinary…..but he was asleep). Dick believes that it is immoral for us to load so much debt on the next generation. He thinks that when we voted for ‘CHANGE’ we didn’t know what we were doing. JAY said ‘yes we did’. Jay obviously remembers Frank Roosevelt back when nobody had anything. Times are different now as poor people without jobs sit and use their computer to look for work, or find that unemployment benefits are more than they could make working. Dick Kelsey believes that he understands the proper role of Government: National defense # one, and they shouldn’t be helping as much, being against ‘bailouts’. Remember we are a republic, not a democracy. In Politics since 1978, he took questions from Joe Lang, Garry, Jay Mike, and John.

THE MEETING
The always appropriate blessing by Joe Voss (Obviously words are a gift from above). The Pledge of Allegiance followed. *A rousing crowd of 31 Optimists and two guests enjoyed the morning. We did miss Marc, Dwayne, Doug, Mike, Doc and ‘Pete’, Bob Bundy (that’s 2 out of 3 Bob), and Dawn. Even Donna Kozera was welcomed back after a long rehab. *President Don changed courses, and read The Redneck Love Poem. You hadda be there.
*Guests: John Browning introduced his so Douglas to Optimism, and Floyd brought back Lance (more on Lance later), who plans to join us as a new member.
*Birthday: We did sing a beautiful birthday song to Don Kutilek, who said that he was over 70! Sure Don. *Sgt at Arms Don did give a short tribute for recently passed long time Senator Ted Kennedy. How soon we forget. Chuck Mansfield drew J D’s number (pass), so another number drawn was Helen James for a Speer’s pie of her choice.
THE PROGRAM
John Strunk proudly introduced ‘his’ 93rd District first term congressman Dan Kerschen, and he said hopefully he will serve for many years, mainly because of his realistic down home wisdom. Dan grew up on a wheat and dairy farm near Garden Plain. He has 3 younger brothers, and a sister Jane (just a year his senior). He has 5 children all either graduated from Kansas State U. or are attending now. Two are teachers, and though he sold the dairy cows, he still farms wheat, milo, corn, and soybeans with two brothers and his oldest son. When Dan talked about his first term in Legislature, and he did not fail to introduce his wife Norene, who is his secretary (one of two), right hand and makes his duties easier. She reads all emails and letters, and passes on her thoughts about them. He did thank his sister Jane for introducing Norene to him. Dan said to be a farmer, a steward of the land you HAVE TO BE AN OPTIMIST, because of the hard work and sacrifice that goes with farming. Dan, and easy going down home, personable man is not a politician, but he is not afraid to speak up about what he know is the right thing to do. After telling about a dream he had the night before, he began: A member of the Transportation and Agriculture committees, he told us the main focus last year was limiting new bills, just fix the old ones. He talked about bills that address texting while driving, the one year restriction for 16 year old drivers, abortion, the left lane passing law, the cotton module user fees for oversize loads, and others. After an 88 day session there was pressure to finish at the end. Jay, Paul, Floyd, chuck, Joe Foss, Judge Joe, and Garry had questions. Representative Dan doesn’t need questions, he needs answers!
Ed note: A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing. George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)

Sept 30---Dr. Dan Thompson
THE MEETING
The good reverend Tom Garrelts began and led. *The ever anticipated CULTURAL MOMENT presented by president Don Kirkland: You might be a Redneck if: You refer to McDonalds as the Big M Supper Club, or the Salvation Army declines your mattress! *John Strunk’s anniversary is August 20. How many years? *George Kreidler’s birthday is August 24, and we did sing for him. He was duly touched. *We prayed for Joe Bribriesca’s family re: the passing of his father –in-law. *Debbie Kirkland reminded us that Optimist Night with about 20 kid’s from Camelot is August 29, and with kids from Carpenter Place is August 30. We voted to buy 20 tickets, and at least five of us should be there. I expect much more than that though. We can then write a check to OI for our tickets. *Francis described true loyalty: something about putting your dog and your wife in the trunk, and after a couple hours see who is happy to see you. And Doc described why pilots might be as smart as blonds. *Sgt-at-Arms Don Kutilek had John Browning pull out ‘Pete’s number for the gift certificate.
THE PROGRAM
Mike Macomber proudly introduced Republican candidate for Kansas Insurance Commissioner Dave Powell. A Nebraska grad and El Dorado resident since 75’, Dave and Lois have 3 children and 6 grandchildren. He has taught math, aquatics, active with the Red Cross, a Boy Scoutmaster, and coached in El Dorado. He has been a licensed agent for 32 years, and Dave has worked to provide innovations in insurance with the Legislature and with agents. A CLU, CFP, and a RHU, Dave is serious about bringing his knowledge and innovative ideas with new leadership and direction to the Kansas Insurance Department. There are 90,000 agents, 1600 insurance companies, and $20,000,000,000 a year in collected premiums in Kansas. 15% of Americans are uninsured, but only 12-13% uninsured in Kansas. He will bring new ideas, working with legislature to make insurance affordable, available, and UNDERSTANDABLE. He will have people answering phones that are experienced, educated, and available. Check him out at DavidPowellForKansas.com. By the way 15% of Kansans don’t have mandated car insurance! Maybe Kansas should have insurance companies report car insurance cancellations to law enforcement. Paul, Dwayne, John Browning, and Jay had questions.
Ed note: From Abe Lincoln “If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one?”

THE MEETING
God is Great, God is Good, Thanks for the food. Tom Garrelts’ shortest blessing ever (his Flag Salute was longer). *THE CULTURAL MOMENT (a moment was long enough) You just might be a Redneck if: ‘You think common stock is a pig owned by more than one person’, or ‘you think Rolex is bathroom tissue’. *We would have sang happy birthday to Doug Hazelwood, but he was out celebrating. *chuck Mansfield is off to the District convention in Olathe. He is the champion for Childhood Cancer, and the Cancer Walk for Camp Quality. He passed around the envelope for donations, and there were quite a few checks from members inside made out to OCFW. *Debbie Kirkland has arranged for ‘TWO’ Wingnuts nights. August 29 with Camelot, and August 30 with Carpenter Place. We need at least 6 members to chaperone. *Drawing: Past multiple winner Frances Buckman drew a number from his table. Floyd’s travelmate, Linda won garden fresh vegetables.
THE PROGRAM
At 7 ½ miles per hour, ole’ Tumbleweed moved along at just the right pace so as to give Floyd and Linda enough time to not miss ANYTHING along the way down the river, etc. They left for the third leg of their journey 2/7/09, and went to many places that we will never see, though Jane recognized some of the Pensacola landmarks. All I can do is try to list some places they traveled by, some places they stopped, and the multitude of different kind of bridges they encountered. All spelling is incorrect, but you’ll get the jist. Mobile Bay, Dog River, Gulf Intercoastal River, Jimmy Buffett’s sister Lulu’s, Ft Walton Beach (where the Marina was only $7 a night, with wine), Carabelle where they met Peacekeeper (you had to be there to understand the humor in that meeting), World’s smallest Police Station (a phonebooth), Alligator Harbor (Floyd pulled his arm out of the water in the nick of time), Seahog Marina, Swanee River, Crystal River (where the Manatees swim), Tarpan Springs (Greektown) [this is where bread crumbs were caught in the air by Terns, and they do sponge fishing], St Petersburg where the HMS Bounty is harbored, Sarasota where they saw homeless people living on small boats, Ft Meyers wher henry Ford and Thomas Edison had modest winter homes, the 2nd largest Bayou tree, Lake Ocachobee, many orange groves, snall locks to traverse, Labelle, Florida where turtles and bugs in quantity lived. Side notes: Floyd named his favorite alligator, Muhammod Ali’ gator. So much in such a short time (for us, not for Floyd and Linda). Thanks.

THE MEETING
Always optimistic, enthusiastic, God fearing Joe Voss presented the day as a present ready to be unwrapped, and he led our Flag Salute.
*President Don still hasn’t got to the bottom of his Cultural Moments: You just might be a redneck if: You proposed to your wife a Dennys, or Your Barbie’s dream house has a clothesline in the front yard!

*We sang happy birthday to Dwayne and Garry.
*Don read a thank you letter from Don and Cynthia Jones for honoring their Urban League Learning Center Unsung Hero.
*Being a slow morning (even though Marc was there), we went right to the drawing where asst. Sgt at Arms ‘Pete’ had Garry Deitsch draw (again) Francis Buckman’s number for a sacked bottle of something.
THE PROGRAM
Judge Clark Owens didn’t disappoint, introducing a fellow judge (traffic) Phil Journey. Finishing up his first year after five years in the Senate and 8 years as a public defender, he still is diligent in improving the way things are done. As a judge he emphasized that he wants to be smart instead of being mean when it comes to being a judge, especially when it comes to DUIs! He has even been to Topeka at the request of Representatives to help pass important legislation. Actually Phil could have chosen Domestic or Juvenile, but picked Traffic because of his experience. He has researched 40 State’s traffic laws, and chose Michigan as a model to develop a new journal entry form. Actually, Phil has helped pass more bills as a judge than he did as a Representative. He did say that 23, 795 citations were issued in 08’, that’s 1700 more than 07’. And he has reduced the time to trial from 8 weeks down to 6 weeks, and his goal is 4 weeks. It is amazing to him how little people know about the law. When asked about a DUI victim’s probation’s driving with an ignition interlock system, He said now it takes a picture of the person doing the blowing, whoa Nellie! Lastly, the State is so short on money that they have been laying off drug counselors, not good! Phil had no problem filling up 45 minutes, and there were still questions waiting.

*Prez Don read a thank you letter from Victory in the Valley for the $157.84 we donated to their cause. Jay says it is the most wonderful organization as they even brought her a Teddy bear during her stay. And Floyd added that they were very helpful during our former member Charles Nelson’s battle eith Cancer.
*On August the 4th, George Kreidler will celebrate his 36th anniversary.
*We did sing a birthday song (though we miss Jim Erxleben’s lead) to Floyd Walpole whose birthday was July 16.

John Strunk, out of the blue said that cattle grazing in the Flint Hills on Blue Stem grass gain more than anywhere else.
THE PROGRAM
Ralph Minter without further ado introduced our friends, Director of Planned Giving for Friends University, Nancy Hinten and Harvey Wright III. A very informative power point ’tag team’ production on how far Friends has come in recent years. They have the lowest graduation debt ($19K) of any of the major Kansas schools. Nancy’s emphasis is how they have major student involvement as most students are involved in 2 or more outside curriculum activities. Friends is 110 years old, and was built out in the country in 1898 (not out in the country now). Originally quaker based, and now it is non-denominational with branches in Lenexa and Topeka. Just in the last five years four major area of development are: 1. a new we site www.friends.edu 600 pages of everything Friends. 2. A complete academic review 3. An affordability campaign and 4. Great Conversation a March 9, 2010 dinner with 30 topics for tables of 10 to discuss (great idea Nancy). Even better than moving CIS from an overdone golf tournament to Evening on the Bayou.
Besides the college of business. Arts, Science, and Education; new majors in Finance, Forensic Science and Spiritual Formation Emphasis have been added. Also Adult programs and Graduate study are available.
New facilities are the Rose Window Plaza with 25,400 pavers, Green Resident Hall (freshmen), the Circle of Friends Plaza, Falcon Glen and the J R & Gertrude Smith facilities for upper classmen.
380 students are involved in 15 sports, and of those 180 are on the honor roll, and there are 34 Academic All Americans (3.5 GPA). The football team went 12-0 and won the KCAC last year, and the Softball teams went to the finals. The school produces 130 Presidential Scholars a year, and they are
shooting for 200. That is worth $10,000 each!
Surviving extensive hail damage last month was a challenge.

Aug 12--Floyd Walpole has pictures of the second leg of THE BIG ADVENTURE. Three completed, one more to go.
Aug 19--Mike Macomber has invited David Powell, candidate for the Kansas Commissioner of Insurance. Good luck Ms. Prager.
THE MEETING
Irv blessed and said the Lord created us for fellowship (among other things), and he led the Flag Salute.
*President Don continues with Southern education, THE CULTURAL MOMENT: You might be a Redneck if: The Sheriff comes to talk with you about your tomato plants, or the judge tells you that shooting crows is NOT a public service. Judge Bribiesca added that if as a baby you have more teeth than your father.
*Floyd introduced potential member Lance Rappard, not only a financial planner, but recently married to WSU’s volleyball coach Kelly.
*Debbie Kirkland has been working to help Camelot (home for young people) to take them to a Wingnut’s game on August 29. We and othe Optimists clubs are invited to attend, and we should be well represented for Optimist’s Night Out.
*Happy birthday to Bob Bundy who stayed home to celebrate, or he didn’t want to be embarrassed by song.
*Gaye reported that Donna Kozera went home yesterday. She is SO HIP! Actually not funny, her left hip is recovering.
*Sgt-at-Arms Don getting ready for the drawing had to tell about his friends two dogs, Rolex and Timex. They are great WATCH DOGS!
Mureiel again won the prize from Nordstrums provided by Chuck and Helen.
THE PROGRAM
Chuck and Helen just back from 18 days, 9 hotels, and mucho denaro. Actually the main objective was the Optimist convention in Orlando where they stayed in a FOUR hotel complex, the Desert Palms Resort. 607 delegates cast 911 votes to vote in a few changes, namely Pilot Clubs, which can be started with 15 members, and you can’t be over 19 tobe in a youth club; and voted down a few things like the president must have unanimous approval before making major financial decisions. Especially after being $300,000 over budget last year.
The new exciting news is TECHNO KAT, an animated program (BYU provided the animation) to keep kids from making a Faux Paw. Keping kids safe on the internet. We will take it to schools, the Y, etc. Let’s tak a byte out of crime! And SUCCESS FOR TEENS, a program that encourages 1. Goal setting, 2. Time management, 3. Keeping a positive attitude, and 4. Developing good habits.
The best news is Kansas’s own past governor David Bruns was voted to the Board of Directors, along with next year’s president, Mark Shriver.
Future conventions are planned for Denver Baltimore, Milwaukee, and Cincinnati.
Chuck and Helen also visited Table rock, the Hermitage, Key West, and the Chapman Plantation in Huntsville. The Kirklands know Huntsville!
Chuck reported that the Northrock Club is now the Deaf Connections Club, and the former SE Club is the CLASS Optimist Club. [Caring Ladies Assisting Students to Succeed.
The before closing Judge Joe explained that (unbelievably) the Wichita Eagle left out a couple important FACTS when reporting on Joe’s actions. All Clear now.
July 15, 2009
THE FUTURE
July 22---An exciting time for us as Chuck and Helen have returned from the OI convention in Orlando, and they will tell us all about it!
July 29---Ralph bring back our friend, Nancy Hinton, PR Director for Friends U.
Aug 5----Clark Owens is Optimistic about this program
Aug 12---Floyd Walpole’s adventures
Aug 19---Dwayne Shannon is thinking
THE MEETING
Irv reminded us that this is the day the Lord made, and he led our Flag Salute.
*The prez’s cultural moment: You know that you are a Redneck if: Your idea of a fun night out is chasing dogs through a swamp, or Motel 6 turns off the light when they see you coming.
*Tom Garrelts reintroduced his son Josh who is with Bear Communications. That the third visit, looks like we have a new member!
*Gaye reports that Donna is in good spirit, and will be using a walker at home next week.
*The July board meeting was cancelled.
*’Pete’ collecting for Marc, who usually collects for Don, had Josh (who was sitting in Gaye’s chair) draw Gaye Erwin’s number for some Nifty Nuts.
THE PROGRAM
Jay after telling us that her daddy told her one, no two things you can’t change: death and taxes, then she introduced H&R Block’s Senior Tax Advisor V, Robert Varner. He is also the pastor at Rose Hill Bible Church, but we didn’t hear any preaching. Robert presented TAX TALK! He was raised on a farm and learned to never pay less than you owe, but also never pay more. I liked the story of the man that drove a bull dozer for a living that told him that he was earning more but going broke because he was paying more taxes. Robert found out that his bookkeeping wife was recording his loans from the bank as income!!!
He refigured that last 3 year and obtained a $12,000 refund for him. He said it is amazing how many people are irresponsible, and don’t save their returns. He charges $40 to make a copy for them when they need it for financing. The laws changes every year without notice. As an old pastor in Nebraska once said: About 80% of the people need a financial guardian. Don’t forget, if you buy a new vehicle in 09’, you get a tax deduction. Robert did give everyone a copy of Tax Talks, Getting everything you’re entitled to.
Thanks Jay for a very informative program.

Aug 5-------Clark Owens up to bat this morning Aug 12-------Hopefully Floyd has returned from his adventure with stories and pictures.
THE MEETING
Joe Voss was grateful for this ‘blessable’ day, and he led our Flag Salute. *The cultural moment (Don says just because he has reached the back of the book doesn’t mean these precious moment are over. He will go back over and use thoughts that missed his first cut!): You know you are a redneck if; Your dream home is a bass boat, or your pocket knife is sharper than you are. *Birthdays a plenty; Ron Stever on the 11th and Marc Kaplan on the 12th, but we celebrated the big nine-0 for Doc Daniel Thompson by singing and a reserved chuckle for his (joke?). Confucious say: ‘Man who runs in front of car is tired, but man who runs behind car is exhausted’ *Gaye reports that after hip replacement, Donna is in good spirits with skilled care at 629 S. Maize. Visit her there or call her cell: 734-0072. *Garry reports that there was a good reason that John Strunk missed the meeting. At the Strunk’s annual (everyone is invited) Fourth of July Extravaganza, while BBQing Ruth gained a projectile in her foot. I can’t imagine the pain. John is home caring for her. *President Don had past president Doug draw Francis Buckman’s number for the Braums gift card, and then our guest speaker drew Tom Garrelts’ number for a beautiful table fountain provided by Joe Lang.
THE PROGRAM
Joe Lang opened with a joke that I forgot, and then introduced Michelle Stroot, director of the Mayor’s Youth Council. She is a Andale High and K State Grad. Explaining that the youth Council began last year when our mayor Carl Brewer was introduced to the concept at the annual National League of Cities conference. Last year there were 42 members as all high schools were represented. They have 48 ready for next year. Audrey Miller is an assistant to Michelle and she moved over from the Regional Prevention Center. Skuyler Stump from Kapaun is the incoming president, and he plans to become a doctor of pediatrics. His government teacher advised him that this new organization is something that he might be interested in doing, and sure enough his first job last year was ‘head of fund raising’! Last year’s president, Marcus McNeal graduated from Heights last year, and will be attending Wichita State focusing on Industrial Engineering. Both of these young men were very impressing (as was verbally noted by Dwayne Shannon), even though Marcus told us that one of the things he learned was how to throw candy in a parade. He was able to go to Florida last year to meet with members of other Youth Councils from other States. Their projects last year were improving Driver’s Ed, and supporting Club organizations. Crime Commission Director Floyd asked if they would have any influence insuring that SROs remain in the schools. They DO kind of serve as an advisory council for the City Commission. What a great program Joe. Thank you.
JULY 1, 2009
THE FUTURE
July 8-------Joe Lang brings the Mayor’s Youth Council led by Marcus McNeal
July 15-------Jay Minter has invited H & R Block during their slow season. July 22-------Chuck Mansfield just returning from the O.I. convention in Orlando will report on what happened.
July 29-------Ralph Minter has asked Nancy Hinton, Friends University PR exec to have breakfast with us. You might remember her with Communities in Schools.
THE MEETING
Irv blessed and blessed and blessed, and we felt good! He also led us in the Flag salute. THE CULTURAL MOMENT: You just might be a redneck if: You prefer to walk the excess length off your jeans instead of having them altered, or you have ever worn cowboy boots with Bermuda shorts. *Irv and Marjorie were married 66 years ago on July 1st. That’s 1943! From Hawaii Irv mailed Marjorie a ring, and she kept it!
Gaye reports that Donna Kozera had a faling mishap and broke her hip. We might not see her for a few weeks, so send get well cards to 14603 W. 21st St 67235.
*At the FRF Summer Blast, the water balloons were a hit! President Don suggests that if you are missing these events, you need to check out you optimistic outlook.

*Tom Garrelts spent his birthday (all day) in the hospital……in the waiting room! Jeanne was in for a minor operation.

*Sgt at Arms Don had past president Marc Kaplan draw Doug Hazelwood’s number for a Braums gift certificate.
THE PROGRAM
Don Kutilek at his ‘prime’! His informative talk about his days in the cattle biz, buying and selling. Livestock and byproducts. Much info that I was wondering about including cattle is sold anywhere from 200 lbs to 1200 lbs, the difference between grazing and grain fed (in fact we are the only country in the world where cattle are grain fed). Did you know a cow will eat 50 bushels before it is ready for market? Up until 1960 cattle could be sold at the terminal market, but now there are just sale barns, basically auctions. There are two types of cattle, butchered or stock. Don says when buying meat don’t buy that over 80% lean stuff….needs a little more marbling…75% is even better. Remember Excell, Swift, Armour, and Cudahy? Where did they go-----they went with the smell on 21st. How many cattle are there in those Western Kansas? Would you guess 10,000 per, nope they each have from 30 to 50,000 head. I’m sure the ‘byproducts’ are plentiful. Don was done at 8, but we asked questions until 20 after. Great program Don, Thanks.

THE PROGRAM
Donna Kozera presented Lamont Love, program director ( creator) of LIF Inc ( Love Is Foundation) a not for profit serving young men ages 13 to 18.He turns 30 at Junes end but has energy, dreams, and desire of a man beyond those years. This home for troubled youth was born out of his upbringing with a single mom, & 3 siblings, lots of personal loss and the vision to realize you can change and affect teens if you work intensely with small numbers, so the home serves only up to 6 youth at a time. Their mantra is “eliminate all excuses” for not helping yourself and “break the cycle “of failure or negative choices. Establish trusting relationships, love, and communication. Set short and long term goals, be productive, and learn basic survival skills of living, (i.e.
plumbing, auto, construction, finance, budgets, savings etc.). Do some community service, get mentors, tutors and hugs. Lots of hugs, lots of love. Lamont started this with his own money and now uses donations and grants to fund the home and operations of the group. Maybe we can be of assistance here. The home is at 2676 E. Conquest Ct, off of27th and Hillside. Thank you and good job!!

THE MEETING
The good reverend Tom blessed the meals (and JD’s biking across Kansas) and led the salute. *He’s at it again, the prez’ Cultural moment: you know you are a redneck if: You vacuum your sheets instead of washing them, or your toothbrush is a hand-me-down. *Guests: Two sons, Tom’s Joshua, and Dick’s Tony *We sang Happy Birthday to Helen (and she sang too!) *Gary , Gaye and all agreed that the weekend fishing trip was terrific! Over 150 fish caught (big ones), the weather was perfect also. They were spoiled as the hook was baited, the fish were unhooked and filleted and brought home. *Chuck announced that besides CLASS and Lynn Gilkey assuming the SE Club’s charter, the NE Club is now the Deaf Connection Optimist Club of Wichita. Future Lt Gov. don Kirkland will brush up on his signing. *Jay reported that she may save her eye! Wearing sunglasses to protect her sensitive eye, she said that just before they were going to make the decision to remove it, it showed positive signs of improving. Eight Tylenol a day plus other stuff to relieve pain. She will go back Monday for evaluation. We will pray. *Also reported that former member Hugh Price will be in rehab for 9 weeks! Two crushed vertebra from a car accident. You will find him at Grant’s Landing? Or call Jay. *Don had Ralph Minter draw ‘Pete’s’ number for the beautiful bag of something provided by Debbie Kirkland. She didn’t show us!
THE PROGRAM
Debbie Kirkland introduced her ‘new friend’ Sue Steele 18 years working for Wichita Public Schools out of the Wichita Children’s Home as the Homeless Liaison for Youth Services. Sue was colorful (flowered top), enthusiastic, and showed real caring for what she does. Her main job is getting kids back to school. Remember Megan Morgan our Unsung Hero? Sue helped her through the Bridges program. Her staff includes one full time social worker and one involvement worker. Part of a Federal grant from the 92’ No Child Left Behind program, and she may get some of the stimulus money. She has helped work with children here from the Katrina and Greensburg disasters. From her job, she has changed her perception of homeless children…..they don’t all come from poverty. Pre-school or school aged children have certain rights or protections under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act. Email her at ssteele@usd259,com Thank you Debbie
June 3, 2009

June 27----It’s the JRF Summer Blast!
July 1----Don Kutilek will begin July with a BANG!
THE MEETING
President Don interrupted the fellowship to begin the meeting, and asked ‘unprepared’ Tom to begin with a prayer. The good reverend prayed for JD and Mark’s bike safety, and the fishing trip safety this weekend. *The Cultural Moment continues: You know you are a redneck if: ‘You have ever driven around after a storm looking for your porch roof’ or ‘if your TP has numbers on it’. Don also told us about a driving trip he and Debbie took in Oklahoma, and they found that there might be some rednecks there. Noticing a dog wearing goggles riding a motorcycle, and a sign on a cattle truck that said: Don’t tell momma I drive a truck, she thinks I’m a piano player in a whorehouse. *Don read thank yous from Briana Baldwin (Unsung Hero) and Lynn Gilkey with CLASS. Past Governor Chuck Mansfield told us that CLASS will be taking over the SE Optimist Club charter. *CLARK: Don’t forget that you and Jane have been married a long time on the 7th! *Dwayne read from the Health Hunter a story entitled ‘An ant can’t move a rubber tree plant!’ A story about how Ruby Harrington keeps a positive mental attitude in supporting Bob in keeping his strength to enjoy life as it is. He enjoys reading, playing cards, and entertaining visitors. *Dr Dan reports that Jay Minters may have a bruised eye when she returns. Her operation was reasonably successful from last Friday’s surgery. *Joe reported that former member Hugh Price was in a car accident while returning from a visit with his wife in the hospital. He is in Via Christie St. Francis with a neck injury. Stay Optimistic Hugh. *Don Kutilek had (pres potential) Debbie Kirkland pull Don Kirkland’s ticket for the Kaplan provided pie.
There were some former members left out last week that I remember well: Rick Macias, Buddy Catstens, Ralph Olenik, Chuck Hartwell, Jack Perrin, Dwight Murphy, Hugh Polson, and Mike Angulo, in fact there were many more that slip my mind now that I think of it. Wouldn’t it be cool, if we invited all former (alive) members back for a reunion meeting!
THE PROGRAM
Marc out did himself with the most entertaining informative program of the year (not that he couldn’t have done it himself), but Dr John Valusek is a premier lecturer on dealing with stress and burnout. He even wrote the book PEOPLE ARE NOT FOR HITTING. Most interesting was his early life story as his parents (15 years old) both arrived in NY from Slavia looking for gold in the streets. They didn’t find it, but found each other. A daughter was born in 21’, a son in 23’, another son in 25’, and then John in 30’ when his mom was 39. He told the story because ‘he was the most important person he had ever met’, and he liked to relate storys of important people. His sister completed the 10th grade, his brothers left for the military before finishing high school, and mentors kept insisting that John continue his education. He ended up with a double doctorate degree from the university of Michigan. His travels from NY to Utica, Mi. to Colorado to Wichita in 1961 for a two year commitment that turned into a 48 year stay. Dr. Valusek has always been fascinated with the brain finding that it 100 billion cells. He has counseled many suicidal patients, and has never lost a one, using three key words: Perception, Awareness, and Choice. The good Doctor even had us belly laughing to improve our health.

THE PROGRAM
Doug Hazelwood introduced Officer Joe Sites, Wichita Police Department. A Wichitan for 47years, 28 years married, almost 20 years on the force, and his son is in his 10 month serving in Iraq. His knows about home invasion which is different than burglary. Most are not random, but targeted for some reason, as 90 % are drug related. Burglars don’t really want anything to do with people, they just want your stuff. Criminals are more brazen today, so be aware of your surroundings, lock your door not just when you are away. Alarms are a good thing, but learn how to use them, and leave them on when you are at home. A alarm will reduce the time a burglar is in your home, as they usually strike from 9am to 3 pm. Much info to review on the DVDs that Officer Sites gave to everyone. Thank you Doug for bringing us this much needed refresher course.

THE FUTURE

THE MEETING
Dwayne Shannon blessed our morning and led the Flag Salute. *President Don’s Cultural moment: I think he can relate first hand. You know you are a Redneck if: ‘You have ever had to shoot the lock off your own front door’, or ‘Your satellite dish is held up with PVC pipe’, or ‘you trip over Christmas lights when picking up Easter Eggs’. *Paul Garrelt’s Anniversary—May 14 *The masses sang Happy Birthday to Chuck and Dick who missed the meeting last week. *Paul extolled the virtues of fishing in Texhoma. The house sleeps seven, and the cowboy guide’s name is ‘SPOOKY’! You reservations need to be in by May 27. *Dwayne quoted from his favorite Eagle section: ‘For a $5 button you can see evolution at work! *President Don read a thank you card from our Bishop Carroll Unsung Hero Clair Dillard. *John Ferguson received a BIG thank you from all of us for his dedicated, continuous work on Bingo. He even brought $112.84 collected for Childhood Cancer, which will go directly to Victory in the Valley. *Next year’s slate of officers (minus a president elect) were read and (thanks to Muriel) were voted in by acclamation. The slate is in last week’s bulletin. *When asked what we did with our ‘stimulus $250.00’, J.D. said he returned his to the govment. Ya’ think….if we all did that, our two trillion dollar debt would disappear in no time. *It was noted that Floyd Walpole was the ARC employer of the year for the fifth straight year. *Dick was fined (didn’t pay) for his wife Jane’s color picture in the Wichita Eagle. She was awarded best in the Via Christie system for competence in the job. It said nothing about optimism. *Sgt-at-Arms Don had our Lt Gov draw Floyd Walpole’s number for 10 John Adams dollars.
THE PROGRAM
Dick was saved by Lt Governor Dow Summers making his quarterly visit. Saved, because his speaker who said ‘don’t worry, I’ll be there’…..wasn’t there! Dow was able to fill more than his allotted time by telling the story of how he started an Optimist club with 26 members in Ghana, Africa. And he has still never been to Africa. Back in 1982 when he was helping with advance voting at the Zoo, he met an man from West Africa who asked Dow about what Optimist clubs do. Dow said we did things for kids. From there Gabriel Yanke on September 27, 2007 chartered the Ghana club. It was interesting that they can’t get passports out of Ghana, because of the ‘flight risk’……they don’t return. –Dow, who is also president of the SE club is looking into the possibility of growing it into an Hispanic club. The state of civic clubs is dwindling, so it’s a good thing that we are Optimists.

SGT at Arms Don K told very funny Yogi Berra story, sold the tickets, and ran the drawing.
Winner of large $ 50 wall clock was Muriel Walpole, (prize donated by Mr. Garrelts).
THE PROGRAM
Mr. Garrelts gave an exuberant & lengthy intro for the speaker(s), Phillip Cosby and his wife Cathy. Phillip is Exec Director and Cathy is Program Director of “National Coalition for the Protection of Children & Families”. Phillip’s background includes being a passionate pastor after serving 22 yrs in the army. His wife Cathy is a retired police/detective public servant. Of course they are good friends of the Garrelts. This church based org works to “Advance the truth of biblical sexuality”. They work in 8 cities addressing mostly church audiences and lobbying local and state audiences about “sex being Gods idea and only experienced through marriage”. They protest to stop or eradicate porn shops, gentlemen’s clubs, etc through obscenity laws, grand juries, zoning laws, and legislation. Their mission includes tackling online porn and they say 90% of that worldwide porn originates here in the US and they state that there is a direct link between on liune porn and the bulk of sexual crimes, rapes, murders, STDs, child molestations, young unwed mothers, etc. There is a bill for the 2010 Kansas session they have worked to get voted on and need our help when it comes up. HS 2144 Community Defense Act which changes how gentlemen’s clubs can operate, and from what Phil said it probably will close them down due to it’s affects. They believe we (churches and congregants) must “ recapture their prophetic zeal” to battle this evil and stop the decay of society caused by sexuality that has run wild and contrary to biblical codes of conduct. Very interesting and thank you.
Publisher’s Note
Many thanks to Marc Kaplan for stepping in as editor since Dick was off to Olathe for a golf tournament. I did get to sit with Jane and find out that their dog, Yaeger passed his test for Therapy Dog and they will be making their first visit to the Carpenter Children’s Place.

You know you are a redneck if: You think the theory of relativity has something to do with inbreeding, or people ask if you were in the movie Deliverence. *We sang happy birthday to Frances Buckman, still young as Doc and Irv beat him by years! *Jay announced that Margie is back to work, and we look forward to her being able to return Wednesday mornings. Hey Margie, don is going to call you…..as we all should. *Guest: Tom Garrelts introduced his oldest son Joshua, just moved with family (5 young-uns) from Tampa, Florida. Welcome. *Bingo’s final Friday produced a $1,000 winner (Joyce Ferguson), and a $500 loser (us)…………. *The District Oratorical contest produced two winners, not our entries even though they did good. *Past Governor Check Mansfield introduced next year’s Lt. governor=====Don Kirkland! *Paul Garrelts thanked all who helped with Unsung Heroes, it truly was a wonderful event. We even received a thank you from Chelsie Nicholson, a NE Magnet school. Even though she has Lupus, she is interested in helping the Optimist cause. *Garry Dietsch reported that there were over 100 kids at OK Kid’s Day at Cheney Lake. We donated 70 rods and reels, and every kid got a t-shirt and a prize. The fire truck was a big hit too! The kids caught about 50 fish and had a great time. *Drawing: SGT at Arms Don had Paul draw Joe Lang’s number for anything (within reason) of his choice.
THE PROGRAM
Home security….Car safety…..Identity theft…..Fraud alert…..and suggestions for victims! Our speaker was unable to be here, notifying Paul the previous evening, and Paul was prepared, again coming through for Optimists (a lesson for all). Using his knowledge from Protection One, he presented a complete education on what can happen and what to do about it. A Security Freeze is a way to protect your credit, just call 888-909-8872 to guide you. For information about the identity theft report, go to www.ftc.gov/idtheft Paul especially talked about what you shouldn’t do. Don’t leave ANTHING visible in your car, roll your windows ALL the way up, keep your car alarm keys next to your bed, test your security system often, and Floyd added ‘keep your shakey flashlight and mobile phone away from credit cards’. In fact Francis added that flashlight is a ‘tubular device to store dead batteries’. If you encounter a driver with road rage, don’t drive to your home! A scam also is happening daily with calls and letters telling you that you car warranty is expiring. Don’t fall for any of these schemes, including that $15,000,000 that you can claim for only $500.00. Paul handed out four sheets of valuable information. So much information….if something bad happens to you like you lose your credit cards, or you see a person peeking in your window………call Paul.
Your editor will be in KC next Wednesday.

UNSUNG HEROES
What a great morning! With eight honorees, guests from the Breakfast Club and the West club, Ron AND Mark Stever, Dr Dan back in the fold, The Vice Mayor of Wichita Scott Moore, Lynn Gilkey and her husband, and light fingered Don Kutilek, the joint was packed. Only one member showed up at Spears, but he made it to Botanica in time for breakfast! Paul Garrelts did outstanding work in planning and presenting an inspiring program. {It turns out that JD and Mark Stever are preparing to bike across Kansas beginning June 6} Ron and Dawn prepared the perfect program, and Chuck has already sent the pictures to all.
After Tom Garrelts blessed our breakfast and led the flag salute, Paul began by introducing the many guests, and then introducing Joe Voss to honor Claire Dillard. Claire introduced Sandy, John, Kathleen and her Bishop Carrol counselor and former member of our club Lloyd Robinson. Claire has overcome an auditory learning disability with faith and a strong compass to exceed in her school work. John Strunk talked about Claire’s friend since grade school Alaina Thom. Alaina introduced Mike, Linda, Nathan, Justin, Ellen, and her counselor Janet Neville. Alaina was adopted at birth, but Amy her birth mother was in attendance. Through many hardships, Alaina always gives 100%! Tom Garrelts presented Briana Baldwin a North High student. Briana was sent to a foster home after her mother died early. She introduced dad Steven and brother Joshua, and is determined to be the first in her family to attend college. Her counselor Jan Knabe says that she has fire and determination as she volunteers and tutors. She has also began a AVID, a Advancement Visual Individual Development program. Garry Dietsch introduced North High senior class president Christa Martinez. After being in foster care, she was adopted by her grandmother ,and she lives with her aunt Gail. Her counselor Lorrie Schoonover said that ATTITUDE is what set Christa apart, and she has started a special program. Mike McComber said that NE Magnet junior Adriana Duran has overcome the tragedy of her sister being murdered. She is VP of her class, very involved with the YWCA, and she is an inspiration to all. Dawn Dunagan’s Unsung Hero NE Magnet senior Chelsie Nicholson after many trips to the doctor to try to find out about her constant pain, discovered she had Lupus! Unable to attend school, kept up her school work at home. Finally back in school, and her counselor Dan Manion said she loves school. Dawn was exceptional in her praise of Chelsie.
Young and vibrant 92 year old Irv Sullivan presented Northwest senior Megan Morgan. She introduced her counselor Michelle Hoffman, asst. principal Mr. Rush, and friend Quinton Parks. Megan, homeless for a spell now has her own apartment, works making $200 a week, involved in the DECCA and the BRIDGES program, and plans to have her own café some day. J.D. Frederick was excited to introduce Northwest junior Brad Luthe. Excited? Yes because Brad was a bundle of enthusiasm. After introducing his friend Autumn, his grandpa and mom, and his counselor Kenya Tibbetts, Brad began to tell everyone to be positive with attitude. Brad almost committed suicide a few years ago, until he found out that his depression was caused by a mental illness. When he was younger a social worker told him that he wasn’t going anywhere! NOW he has a 3.3 GPA, tutors others, AND is a National motivational speaker. He said ‘ya know the Toby Keith song HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW?........ Well?
Asst. City Manager Scott Moore, here for his third year in a row, expressed his admiration for all our Unsung Heroes. Lynn Gilkey also added that her organization CLASS could be of some help. Paul Garrelts was elegant in his closing remarks reading THE WINDS OF FATE.
All recited the Optimist Creed to close this inspiring morning. Thanks to all involved.

THE MEETING
Rev. Tom blessed and led. *The president announced that the Cultural Moment is back by semi-popular demand: You might be a redneck if: Your main business worry is ‘law enforcement’! And your spouse’s brass knuckles set of the security alarm at the airport. *The JRf party was a rousing success thanks to the Kirklands, Mike Macomber, JohnStrunk, Gaye, Donna, and others. Mike even told one of the residents that he would look forward to meeting him when he returns to ‘life. The kid said ‘No you don’t!’ Whoa! *’Pete’ reports that Doc is slowly recovering, and promises to attend the Unsung Heroes program. Also it is reported that Margie has returned to work after recovering from a stroke. *Jay and Ralph were seen at breakfast on Tuesday morning! Our meeting is WEDNESDAY! *We were happy to see that Floyd has returned from the RIVER, but he plans to return to the RIVER in 4 weeks. Guests: a five year old (Irene) and a 2 year old (Daisy), grandchildren of Jane, visiting from Steamboat Springs. Jane tells the true story of purchasing a couple chicks at Atwoods, and over hearing a young boy telling his friends that those were ‘chicken nuggets’! *Don reported that Victory in the Valley’s appreciation letter for the $474.35 raised by Jane’s bucket and Stan’s efforts at bingo. By the way our next to the last bingo raised $165.80 thanks to John Ferguson. *Sgt at Arms Don had past president, past Lt Gov, past Governor Chuck Mansfield draw Our guest speaker’s number for the Spear’s gift certificate.
THE PROGRAM
Former Communities in School’s board member Dwayne Shannon introduced CIS Executive Director Mary Galvan. Dwayne was on the committee to find a new Director and agreed that Mary was the best of many, even though she would be moving from the private sector to the non-profit arena. Mary said that CIS is the fifth largest youth serving organization in the nation, and number one in documented dropout prevention. As 7000 students drop out daily in the US, we lose about one third of our youth to the streets. CIS is committed to not duplicating services, as they have Site Coordinators (capacity builders) at each school site. CIS and it’s Reality University are so successful that the banking industry is helping to fund to take it nationwide, because it teaches high school students financial responsibility. The program has teachers ask them where they want to be when they are 26, then assign them a occupation and a checkbook with a monthly income based on their grades. Then CIS takes over and let’s them go to each of 14 booths to spend and save. What a ‘wakeup call’! CIS goes to where it is needed, even Holy Savior. 20% of donations, including grants and the United Way funds go directly to the cause. Mary also noted that there #1 fundraiser is Evening on the Bayou in Old Town on June 27th, and she invited us all to attend. What a wonderful organization for us to be acquainted.
APRIL 8, 2009
April 11--------Big Easter party at the Juvenile Residential Facility. You will enjoy enteracting with these young folks that are temporarily housed here. 1:00 to 3:00PM April 15--------Hopefully you have been to the mailbox before today! John Ferguson will be featured today. April 16--------Communities in Schools STAR LUNCHEON! Be at the Broadview before noon to sit with the Optimists for an afternoon of feel-good stories. Even Dave Rodine is coming back for this event. April 22--------This is one of our reasons for being. For over 15 years we have been hosting Unsung Heroes. This year at Botanica we will tell the stories of young folks from North, NE Magnet, the Urban League, Bishop Carroll, and Northwest. John Strunk, J.D., Gaye, and other members will present their heroes.
THE MEETING
Tom Garrelts opened with a prayer and led the Flag Salute. Marc mentioned that the blessing should have been given by our guest speaker. *Guest Katie Todd (daughter of former member Bob Todd) with CIS, promoting the Star Luncheon, Reality U., and the OK Kid’s Day at Cheney Lake. *Oratorical Contest: Chuck reported that BOTH our winners took first in the Region, and now on to the District in Manhattan April 25. YEA! *Simon Volunteer Fair: The Mall was packed, and Paul reported some interest as he, Dawn, John, and others were manning our booth to extol the virtues of Optimist membership. *John Strunk reintroduced Larry Booze who told us about the Cheney Lakes Association hosts OK Kid’s Day on the 25th . 9-10 register, 10:30 Ken Lockwood demonstrates birds of prey, lunch, fishing, demonstrations by the Cheney Fire Dept., a Fish and Game biologist, etc. All free, and every kid gets a prize! *Don had a member who every Spring gets going! Garry Dietsch drew Francis Buckman’s number for a large autographed copy of Dick and Jane.
THE PROGRAM
Jane introduced recently retired Rev. H. Patrick Malone (I know him at Pat, our handicaps are the same). Father Malone, after a stint in the navy was ordained in 1969. And after missions with Christ the King, Our Lady of Lourdes in Pittsburg, Barquisimeto Venezuela, St. Teresa in Hutch, St. Agnes in Castleton, Our Lady of Guadalupe in Newton, St Mary in Derby, all before he was named pastor of Holy Savior in 1992. After retiring last year, he took on the leadership of the Catholic Relief Services, and he is busier now than he ever was, and he loves it. He mentioned the movie Slumdog Millionaire to point out the poverty in the world. It is sad to know that 30,000 kids die (daily?) of malnutrition and contaminated water. CRS was established in 1943 as a response to the needs of refuges, and now they serve in 100 countries. It is easy to proclaim the gospel rarely using words! 94% of all donations go directly to the cause, and how rare is that? The main purpose of CRS is to build solidarity. Father Pat asks ‘ How do you help people around the world?’ We could tell that he has a genuine passion for young people. Put your faith into Action brochures were passed to everyone. Thanks to Jane and Father Par Malone.

THE MEETING
A beautiful opening prayer and Flag salute led by Tom Garrelts. *Good to have Jay and Ralph back….and ‘Pete’ who explained that Doc would return with warmer weather. We have missed Margie recently because of health problems, and now we find that she suffered a stroke last week. She will fully recover though.
*Chuck reported that at the CCDHH contest last week, our female winner won, and the boy was 2nd.
*The president (Don) has put ‘the cultural moment’ on hold until further notice. *Jane reported an additional $52 collected pennies at a time was given to Victory in the Valley. *Dwayne reported of a former member Harry Frazier’s passing, and his gift for fund raising.
*Sgt at Arms Don had us guess what member was a downhill champion skier, cross country biker, tops in his class handball player, current WSU student, part-time auctioneer. Wasn’t a no-brainer, but we did guess J.D., and he drew 2 tickets that happened to be our guest speakers.
THE PROGRAM
Lynn Gilkey is a survivor of childhood abuse, teen rape, and 15 years of drug abuse or self-medicating as she put it! She brought her husband David and one of her NW High School CLASS ladies (Amber) for support. A 1982 East High Blue Ace grad who almost lost her life has turned her life into helping girls who could be on the same path from which she recovered. As she sat in the police car, and knowing she was facing ‘a lot of years’ in prison, and remembering her lawyer telling her that he might get her sentence reduced from 15 to 10 years in prison, a new serious prayer was formed. This time she decided that she was going to dedicate her life to teaching young girls how to make better choices. Seeing two judges in our audience brought back memories. Also when she entered the courtroom handcuffed to Jonathon Carr woke her up to the complete seriousness of her situation. Thanks to a creative judge, who sentenced her to 18 months probation which if violated, her husband David would do the time and vice versa. Lynn and David have been ‘clean’ for 8 years and married for 4. She has started, under the umbrella of the Urban League, CLASS (Caring Ladies Assisting Students to Succeed) mainly teaching love yourself first! At this time she goes to four high schools totaling about 80 students. Finding that some student haven’t even opened a bible, she knew her calling. And now Lynn finds her speaking ability has given her the opportunity to speak before large groups (even in NY City). One such group at the Marriot an attorney offered to help get ‘felon’ expunged from her record. She presented Amber from NW, who spoke with a new found confidence about how much Lynn (her second mom) means to her. Becoming a part of the Sisterhood Group helps her and others come out of the darkness to have dreams as big as the sky. As she says Miss Lynn is her Angel.

THE MEETING
Irv began with a blessing and flag salute. I think we missed the ‘CULTURAL MOMENT’, or maybe I was listening to a couple other conversations while president Don was on the mic’. Reminds me of when I visited the Kansas House proceedings a couple weeks ago. On when I questioned one Representative, he said ‘the speaker of the House wasn’t talking about anything important!’ *The Thompsons and Minters were missing, and we had fun anyway. *Dwayne and Dottie Shannon celebrated being married 15 happy years on the 24th. Actually Dwayne said they have been married 58 years!! *The board reported that there will be only three more Bingo nights! John reported we made $128 and Jane gave $422 to our Childhood Cancer Campaign. The money was raised by Stan asking for donations during bingo, and it goes directly to Victory in the Valley. Drawing: Don had president Don draw Gaye’s number for the custom embroidery on whatever, and she promptly donated it to Nguyen Le our 2nd place Essay Contest winner.
THE PROGRAM
Dawn introduced our 2nd place Essay Contest winner, Nguyen Le and her parents Dennis and Qu. The title for all essays was The Power of Youth! Nguyen a bright East High student who aspires to go on in microbiology, read her entry, emphasizing that youth is the prime age to learn. Youth is the age marked by impatience, rebellion, and impulsiveness. However, if you can shift from a pessimistic to an optimistic perspective for just a second, you can see infinite potentials waiting to be released from every youth. Sometimes you may feel as if problems will enshroud the world, and the light of a brighter future seems to dim with each passing second. Rest assure that the seemingly dimming light will never fade away, because our legion of youth will light our way into the future, without fail (or maybe with a few along the way).

We sang happy birthday to John Strunk. We noted the absence of The Minters, the Thompsons, The Georges, Dwayne and a few others, but we had a full house anyways.
* NO Optimist float in the Riverfest Parade! – Reports the president
We had 3 guests from our Bingo hall who work there with/for us. Kristia Chapman, Courtney Cain, and Trenia Arrington graced our meal and meeting.
We passed around a thank you from the JV center for Valentine celebration. They love us. We thanked our members who helped at the St. Pat’s party. We also shared our appreciation for those who helped with our in house Oratorical judging and timing.
Fergy (John) told us we had about 131 players at last Bingo and made about $ 128 after a late purchase of unneeded pull tabs, so we really made much more.
**A special board meeting after the regular one address the challenge of too few Optimists to continue Bingo. A 30 day notice to cease Bingo was signed and mailed to Tom Wagle. We will need to support 3 more games with only Optimist workers. Your help is needed.
SPEAKER(S) CORNER
Mike McComber brought Bob Todd’s brother Jim to address us about the Crime Stoppers annual “Scholastic Day for Youth”. They service about 130 kids and this program needs a bit of funding with lunches running about $ 15 per youth. ( Seems like a lot to me). This happened at the end of April and they address many of the subjects in our schools that plague our youth. They are working on a hot line for youth to report problem kids anonymously and a safe website for that also. Good program for youth. Thank you both.
Garry Dietsch introduced the scheduled speaker(s). Bruce Harris who owns the A-OK pawn shop empire and is very involved with charities, youth, and not for profits, and Kelly Peters, the area director of the “ Kansas Childrens Service League”. Bruce has a very interesting story of his own survival from near death that lit his interest in working with kids. He started from humble beginnings and worked for free to get his business education and legs before becoming so successful he just purchased both of Dick George’s pawn shops. He loves serving the public and that drives his fine work ethic.
The main speaker brought by Bruce through Garry, was Kelly. The KCHS is the offspring of two charities each over 100 year old that merged to serve families and children where abuse and neglect exist or are projected to occur. Throughout their 113 year span of service they offer direct case work service to the more than 40,000 Kansas children each year who suffer under this plague. About 6,000 kids enter foster care in Kansas each year. Most of these are ages 8 and up and wait for you to adopt them. They work with more often with moms ages 25 and up with kids already that are again pregnant and wish to give up this next baby, (surprisingly not teen moms here). She reviewed signs that indicate probable current or future neglect and abuse. They offer a hotline open 24/7 for contact for dealing with anger, abuse, alcohol, drugs, and other issues.

THE MEETING AND PROGRAM
At exactly 7:30 sharp President Don called on Tom Garrelts to bless our breakfast and encourage our Oratorical contestants, and lead our flag salute. A 41 year teacher at Robinson, Miss Hodge has been bringing middle school contestants to Optimist clubs for many years, and she brought nine wonderful young folks to compete. Sgt at Arms Don Kutilek guarded the door to make sure there were no interruptions. The timekeeper (Dick) and three competent judges (JD, Doug, and Mike) had their hands full keeping track of many elements to determine a first, second, and third place for both the girls and boys divisions. Based on a total of 100 points plus deductions for being below 4 minutes or over 5 minutes, the winners as follows: Boys: 1st Parth Khar, 2nd Trevor Scha, 3rd Andrew Potlk Girls: 1st Sapna Shaw 2nd Elana Cokava 3rd Natale Lash

THE MEETING
Irv Sullivan, only one day after his 92nd birthday (we did sing for him) gave his thankful blessing for the beautiful morning, and he led the flag salute. *The Prez’ cultural moment: You know you are a redneck if: When the Roto-Rooter man comes to your house and asks ‘What is that smell??’, or You have a recipe for catfish lasagna, or you like corndogs for breakfast. *Don had Marc explain why our waitress Shannon gave him a gift of stuff that would benefit from his ineptitude. Included a ‘sippy’ coffee cup and a bib! *John reported another great evening of profit at bingo! $542, and we had to pay out $100 for help because we didn’t have enough OPTIMIST volunteers. No bingo this Friday, but we need lots of help on the 13th. *As we speak, Don is meeting with Cal McMillan to co-ordinate Unsung Heroes for the Riverfest parade float. *Past governor Chuck asked for us to attend the Regional contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. It will be at the Extension Center or 4H Bldg on 21st St. at 1PM March 28. *Pete had past winner Donna draw Dawn’s number for the neat surprise prize that Helen brought.
THE PROGRAM
Our CCDHH contestants had to cancel the night before, not leaving much time to plan, but Helen, not to be deterred, came to the rescue. On one of Chuck and Helen Governor’s trips, they happened to be in North Platte, Nebraska where they made acquaintance with R.P. Smith. Who is that you ask? Well, just a 4th generation cattle rancher with a flare for writing poetry. He published a book entitled A RIDE THROUGH RHYME. Cowboy poems. We were lucky enough to hear three narrated by a great enthusiastic, animated Helen James: >Dad, you’re a pretty good friend< >Bugs< >Ranch Romance< Although we could have listened to Helen read them all, we didn’t and Don closed the meeting a little early. Marc had to get back to work.
February 25, 2009
MARK YOUR CALENDAR

could be there, but I will be in Las Vegas with his second and third in command.
Bruce purchased The Pawn Shop from the George family. March 25---Dawn Dunagan always steps up with an interesting program
THE MEETING
The good Reverend Tom Garrelts remembered to bless our food and lead the Pledge. *The prez’ Cultural Moment: You know you are a Redneck if: You have more oil on your baseball cap than in your car, or ‘potted’ meat on a saltine is your favorite meal. *Irv Sullivan is having a birthday on March 3rd. Obviously 92 is the ‘new’ 60! *Bingo: John reported that after the many payouts we still made $550.42! Great! *The Riverfest: We have signed up to put a float in the parade. It will be great fun with potentially 32 Unsung Heroes on board, plus many of us. Do you know anything about decorating a flatbed? *Past Governor Chuck Mansfield just back from the convention brought us new patches for our ‘overpatched’ banner. We averaged over $20 per member donated to OI. *Drawing: More of us need to buy more chances for the drawing. I think donna puts sticky stuff on her ticket. ‘Pete’ had our past Gov. draw and he drew Donna’s number for the third week in a row. If you trade tickets with her, you might have a chance.
THE PROGRAM
The always highly anticipated Dr David Farnsworth view of the world, specifically Gitmo! Francis did not give his 4 hour biographical background, but just suffice to say that Dr. Farnsworth, a retired Political Science professor, has often been asked to brief ranking officers at the Air War College. He did say that our relations with Cuba are quietly improving. He is so familiar with the names of all foreign leaders and their views that it is difficult to keep up with him. What is Guantanamo (sp) Bay? A country, a colony…. Who knows? There is no international law there. President McKinley gavge Cuba independence in 1902 to rescue our little brown brothers”. What bother Dr Farnsworth is that the networks just don’t give us the facts of what is going on. Actually I can’t describe here what all was discussed: Haiti is the poorest country. G20, Romania and Bulgaria were the 26th and 27th countries to join the European Union. DeGaul wanted France out of NATO. He had fun when the Soviet Union collapsed, because it split up into 15 countries and Russia is STILL the largest country in the world (before 8 million square miles, now only 6 ½ million square miles). He said keep an eye on the election in Iran. So much in such a short time, but time for questions from Jane, Don, Jay, Gaye, Mike, and Dawn.
FEBRUARY 18, 2009
Feb 25------We wait all year to hear what is UP in the world, and this is THE day
when Dr David Farnsworth fills us in. Dr. Farnsworth has taught generals on world
affairs, and so much more. Mar 4------Either Oratorical contest Mar 11-----the other contest. We need a couple volunteer judges for both.
Mar 14----- St Patty’s Party at the Juvenile Res Facility 1-3pm
Mar 18---- Garry Dietsch
Mar 25---- Dawn Dunagan
THE MEETING
After 30 minutes of camaraderie, Tom Garrelts blessed our morning, & led the Flag salute. *The Cultural moment: You know you are a redneck if: your husband has spray painted your car’s upholstery, or your living room sofa came from a Chevy. *Guests: Taylor Levins and Michelle Walsh brought a new author, 9 year old Adam Walsh who was promoting his first ‘book’ The Adventure of a Rabbit and a Cow.
* Lt Governor Dow Summers madehis quarterly visit. *Don’t miss John F’s Anniversary on the 22nd and birthday on the 24th next Tuesday. *Bingo: There were 141 players & we made $545! *The JRF Valentine’s party was a success as we had 8 volunteers to interact. Be ready for the JRF St Pat’s party on March 14th. The more volunteers, the more fun!
*Drawing: Don had past Governor Chuck Mansfield draw Donna Kozera’s number (2 weeks in a row) for the surprise from John Browning.
THE PROGRAM
John Browning introduced Mark Keene with Keene Insight (mark@keeneinsight.net) A 38
year old ‘doctor’ of finance, and a bundle of enthusiasm. John read off the many accolades
that Mark has received already. Enough so that me thinks he is destined to enter politics
some day. Mark emphasized that you need to be diligent investigating into where to invest.
Do your homework, know what you are doing! He also said we as a nation of people need
to have ‘core’ values based on our Constitution, and live below your means. Have F.I.R.E.!
F-Faith I-Integrity R-Responsibility E-Excellence. Being the first one to work and the
last one to leave is not as good as ‘work less and do it right’. He teaches the one third
philosophy: Give a third, Save a third, and Spend a third. You don’t establish credit by
having credit cards, but by being debt free! Have written goals, develop a strategy. Do you
spend more time planning a vacation than you do planning your finances? His plan should
be our plan: to make the World a better place> Fix relationships, Fix you (health-
education), Fix your career, fix your finances, and pass it on.
Editor’s note: Mark has great ideas that can not be disputed. Now who is going to fix Government? Mark Keene Thank you John for a terrific program.

THE PROGRAM
Joe Bribriesca said no introduction is needed for our Mayor Carl Brewer, who brought some help as he spoke to us about Wichita’s economy. Director of Finance Kellie Carpenter and Budget Officer Mark Manning were on hand to confirm his words. Carl is also a member of the Northeast Optimist Club, so his words were naturally Optimistic even as he numbered the recent aircraft layoffs. We are positioned for a ‘fast’ recovery. After a few ‘What is an Optimist’ jokes, he got down to business outlining a ‘bounce-back’ plan. The airlines have many backlogs to fill----in time. Meanwhile some are going to a shorter work week preventin further layoffs. Even with a $500,000,000 city budget, there is still a deficit, but the staff will work harder and smarter (Kellie smiled in agreement). Our Mayor has asked our new City Manager to postpone hiring, make the labor contract competitive, and look for ways to refinance debt. The Mayor added that he will not accept any increases in wages. He said the City and United Way of the Plains will establish a Lay-off Center with help for those effected. And we will anticipate Federal assistance for ‘shovel-ready’ projects. Mayor Brewer emphasized that our new City Manager Bob Layton is likeable, focused, detailed, and already has spent sleepless nights working. We want to invest in DT to have a vibrant downtown, it is the ‘HEART’ of the city! Not to forget that our mayor has been appointed as Chair of the Large Cities Council for the National League of Cities. There were many questions by Don, Jay, Joe, John Strunk, John Browning, and of course, Marc.

THE PROGRAM
Marc Kaplan met Karl Peterjohn early in Wichita, because Marc has always been politically active. No one expected Karl to win the County Commissioner election, not even Karl. When asked what it was like being a Commissioner: ‘My jokes are funnier now’, and ‘my phone calls are returned more promptly’ . His second meeting was this morning, and he will focus on three issues: Why $2.7 million to improve the Forensic Science center, Why$50 million or $125,000 per bed for an addition to the jail, and where the State’s budget of $1.6 billion is diverted. He and a small group, including the county manager are looking at facilities in other counties that may be able to house inmates. Time and travel costs must be weighed before a decision is made. Karl pointed out that our ‘recession proof’ economy is actually a year behind, and we may be hit even harder than the rest of the country. When talking about our growing dependence, he says the chain of dependence is going all the way to Washington with unintended consequences. Karl would like a Taxpayer’s network of potential expenditures on-line so we can look up what is going on. Don, Dwayne, Marc, JD, and George had questions to run Karl late for his County Commission meeting. Susan Estes heads up Americans for Prosperity, formerly Ks Taxpayer’s Network.

It’s not Maude Carpenter’s place, IT’S Carpenter Place! Shellee Morrison is the CEO/Director of Development, and she is enthused about the importance of their work. They began in 1942, and are located on 13 ½ acres at 13th and Meridian. They serve all girls ranging in age from 10 years old to 19 staying from 6 months to 3 years. Shellee says Carpenter Place is faith based and their focus is on Residential Treatment, rebuilding families and restoring lives. Some of the girls are transitioning out of foster care. They attend public schools, but are looking for alternatives. How can we help? The Children’s Charity Classic is Monday April 27 at Sand Creek, and this is their major fundraiser as all their funds are from private donations. Might be a good time to get a team together. THE PROGRAM
Mike Macomber introduced our long lost former president and long time Deputy DA, Kim Parker from Jefferson County, Kansas. It turns out that Mike grew up a little in that county also. Kim moved from Ozaki to Moran, Ks when she was eight. Kim is ready to settle a little now that she has Amy enrolled at KU. For a graduation present she took her to Europe where they visited seven countries traveling by rail. Kim made it be known that she loves her work, but hates the politics of it. She focused her talk on two subjects: 1. She attended the State child‘s death review, a board of 12. There are between 800 and 900 child’s (under 18) deaths a year, and each has to be reviewed for cause and blame. She is especially passionate regarding young people suicides. Such hopelessness, and how do we fix this problem? That is why she appreciates what we do to give children HOPE. In the next few months she will be trying five murder cases involving children under four years of age. In every case the child was in the care of someone with no bond or emotional ties to them. Kim asks us to be involved with the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) led by Diana Shunn who spoke to us a few months ago. Kim was asked to give us the IS EVERYBODY HAPPY yell to finish. Is everybody H.A.P.P.Y.?
Don ended the meeting by challenging us to ask ourselves: WHY DID YOU JOIN THIS OPTIMIST CLUB INITIALLY? And then think about supporting our events for youth.

THE PROGRAM
Floyd was proud to introduce Kelli Hoobler, his Mississippi traveling partner’s daughter, who is the Wichita State Cleerleading coach. She was a SE cheerleader, an Allstar her senior year with a reward of a trip to London (been 4 times since). After 2 years at Coffyville, she graduated from WSU. She taught art to 8th graders at Brooks middle school, and is a member of the Universal Cheerleaders Association. During her career she has had2 broken ankles and dislocated her shoulder 3 times. In her travels, Kelli works more with the coaches now. WSU won the National contest in 07’, but the award was revoked because of an ineligible student. The next year, they started from scratch with new folks. That coach resigned, and Kelli took the reins this year. She emphasizes safety. New rules just don’t let us see some of the more exciting routines of the past. She will try to recruit guys from Junior colleges and girls from high school. And now, already they are headed to Orlando with a new squad for the semifinals competition. She emphasized to us that cheerleading is not a sport, but and entertainment! She only gets $24,000 a year for everyone’s scholarships, so money is an issue. J.D. found out where they get ‘some’ money, as when they throw little balls to the crowd, one of the girls ‘hand delivers’ one up to Floyd’s seat. Debbie Kirkland volunteered to have her church group begin working on a quilt for J.D. to auction. Kelli doesn’t do well with spare time: she is working on her Masters, teaching, coaching, and planning a wedding.

*J.D.s news : Mangino might stay with KU, WSU beat Iowa 74-57—Stutz played great! And there is a new smoke shop out East.

*2001 November 26 John Strunk joined thanks to Garry, and in 2000 Tom Garrelts joined thanks to J.D. *Jokeman Joe B. was replaced by Mike Berry. Jet airplane. Right engine blew. Pilot assured passengers all OK. Left engine blew up. Again pilot assured that all was well, don’t worry. As the flight attendant and pilot put on parachutes to go for help!
*Dwayne, adjusting December Bell ringing temperature to 70 for December 5 and 12 at Wal-Mart West, was obviously disappointed with our volunteer efforts. We, as a group are showing unfounded signs of wear! *President Tom reviewed the beginnings of Thanksgiving from 1541 when Coronado observed Thanks in Texas, then milestones in 1564, 1607, 1619, 1621, 1777, 1789 (G. Washington), 1863 (A Lincoln), to 1941 when congress declared the 4th Thursday in November as Thanksgiving. *Floyd had John Strunk draw ‘Doc’ Thompson’s number for a truly wonderful prize furnished by Chuck. A Royals (2015 World Series Champion) mascot. Would have been a good time to buy 6 or 9 tickets. Doc was co-erced into revealing his 56’ Mark II with 60,000 miles on it, still sitting in his garage. Any bids? Yes! JD offered to pay full price.
THE PROGRAM
Who Knew? Internet Safety! A person’s personal life revealed to the world? Yep, it’s coming, and we as Optimists are charged with learning and helping young people to understand the dangers of Facebook, Google, Amazon, GPS, Linekedin, etc. Chuck Mansfield helped us understand by showing two DVDs. Kids now have access to the world, and everything they post can affect their future. Optimist International is embarking on an education program for us to teach and learn. Check out ikeepsafe.org. Web search can be good….and it can be bad! It should be built as an asset not a liability. Did you know that 77 % of teens have a profile online? Parents need to: Keep current—Keep communicating--- and keep checking. Install web filters, and say to kids TEACH ME. We all need to treat others with respect and report abuse online. Keep hope and a positive vision. Call 800-500-8130
A faith you have to borrow from your parents cannot endure. Ultimately you have to own it yourself. Paul Harvey

Joe Voss quoted ‘He who waters others shall be refreshed himself’, and he led our Flag Salute *Guests: Tom Garrelts introduced Andrew Huhta (2nd visit). He is with Great American Senior Benefits. Paul Garrelts introduced a younger, but taller brother Jon Garrelts with American Movers. He and his wife have a one year old.
*Birthdays: We sang to Muriel Walpole. She said her life began in Dallas, at 5 moved to California for two years, and has lived in Wichita ever since. An East High grad, two years at K State and two years at a Dallas nursing school, and she started out working with Dr. James Wray! *The News with F.O. Buckman: Pizza Hut is opening 2 to 3 Huts a day in China! Japan and Korea are importing a hundred times more cars…………..
Fines: Jay was fined (first offense) for not wearing her name tag (I knew who she was anyway. Ralph will pay. Joke: Mike Berry said an air traffic controller was communicating with a large airliner about making a Right 360, pilots response ‘but that will cost $2,000’, controller said something about $4,000, and that’s as much as I got.
*Floyd was presented a sponsor’s pin for bringing Lance into our fold.
*History: President Tom informed us that on this date in 1883 the U.S. was divided into time zones…..because the railroads demanded it be so. Also I 1889 the Navy introduced the USS Maine at the Brooklyn Naval Yard, and in 1891 it was sunk to begin the Spanish American War. Our lesson of the day was how ships are named.
*Bell Ringers: Dwayne didn’t have to plead for volunteers because it is going to be now 73 degrees, when we last heard it was going to be 72 degrees.
*President Tom reviewed what happened in the board meeting: A new seating arrangement, a March reunion at our meeting of past members, Helen James is the membership chair, speaker assignments will be sent out quarterly, the drawing prize winner will be next weeks greeter, and John Strunk has agreed to a Spring fund raiser. Paul announced that we will have a raffle during the Christmas party with a night on the town (Old Town) prize, and this is to raise money to fund Unsung Heroes.
*Past Governor Chuck Mansfield reported that for a small fee you can advertise in the National Convention’s program. It will be in Denver in July 2011. Seriously, he also mentioned that a cannibal had a missionary for dinner to get a taste of religion. *Joe Lang reviewed last week’s program and upcoming programs. *Drawing: sure enough, Muriel drew Chuck Mansfield’s number for the ‘last’ pie. Hello greeter.
THE PROGRAM
Think Wink! For Congress. Mike Macomber found that Wink had a 9:30 in Winfield, but he did send John Witmer, a good enthusiastic long time friend of Wink. John is with Sales and promotions at Exploration Place, and he is the color commentator for the Wichita Wild, among other things. He told us that Wink really wanted to be here, and would come soon. John is of the opinion that you should vote or you have no right to complain. About Wink: He was the 2008 Businessman of the Year. Though from a well to do family, he had to pay his own way through college by selling trash cans. After graduation he worked as a floorman on an oil rig, and when his dad retired he made him buy the business. He is not a politician, He employs many and pays 100% of their health insurance, he is strongly pro-life (even to the point of shooing off crows trying to get a squirrel), though not a hunter he is pro second amendment. He is a businessman (he signs the front, not the back of checks), he supports alternative fuels even though his primary business is oil. He is for a sound economic policy, against Cap & Trade. He has six grandkids, which means John thinks he would only serve 4 to 6 years. Whoever wins the Republican nomination Jim, Mike, Dick, Jean, or Wink will have their hands full combating the silver tongued ‘Muslum Rog Golye’ in the November election. John finished with ‘What does a 2 lb canary say?...chirp, What does a 5 lb canary say?....Chirp! What does a 40 lb canary say?.....Here kitty, kitty.

THE MEETING
Joe Voss gave thanks for the ‘gift’ of the day, and prayed for our veterans, then led the Pledge *The news from JD: On this day in 1911 (that’s 11/11/11) OKC set a record high and low on the same day. It was 82 at noon and 17 at midnight! KU beat Pittsburg…State, it will probably rain today, today is Vet’s Day, and even though JD was 4F, he is proud of four brothers who served. Tom had the veterans stand: Joe Lang, Doug Hazelwood, Ralph Minter(tail gunner), Doc (Lt Commander USN), Chuck Mansfield (Major), Francis Buckman (1st Lt), Garry (USAF), John Strunk (Sgt USA), Tom (Capt USAF).
*Tom history lesson: AT 11 AM on 11/11/.. it was all quiet on the Western Front, as WWI ended. From Armistice Day to Veterans Day or as Doug remembers ‘Remembrance Day’. There are 23 million living veterans, and 1900 leave us every day. In fact, as Floyd pointed out, at the National Cemetery in Hawaii a Vet is buried every 15 minutes. Also noted that at the World’s Fair in St Louis in 1904, the ice cream cone, hot dogs, and iced tea were introduced. Today was also the anniversary of Tom Jefferson’s sig on the La. Purchase. *Pete’ will O-L-D [according to Doc] next week on the 41st anniversary of her 39th birthday.
*Tom read a thank you letter from the Salvation Army as Dwayne passed around the sign up sheet for Bell ringing at Walmart. If it’s not 70 degrees, call Dwayne if you decide to stay home. *Jim Todd, president of Crime Stoppers brought by their newsletter for all to read. *Program chair Joe Lang reviewed upcoming programs. *Sgt-at-Arms Floyd Walpole had Muriel {birthday 11/17} draw Doc Thompson’s number for the $15 Long John Silver certificate. (A very thoughtful and timely gift as the program was fishy) *Chuck brought more Dime-A-Day forms for us as not quite half have participated. He also reminded us that we could join the Century Circle….that’s just a ‘bill’.
*And 86 years ago this date highways were officially numbered, and today the most famous of all has an official ending from Chicago to the Santa Monica Pier! So there!
THE PROGRAM
Garry Dietsch has a PASSION, and was emotional in introducing Mark Chambelain, founder and president of PASS IT ON, a 501C3 organization that provides mentors to get young kids outside, specifically to FISH. Garry told of his greatest moment many years ago when he picked up Billy {name changed to protect the memory} to take him fishing. Billy proceeded to catch a bigger fish than even Garry had ever caught. When Billy excitedly ran to show his previously uninterested dad, Garry told him that he got to see him catch it, and dad didn’t. Billy’s dad was so moved that he became involved with his son and eventually became a scoutmaster! Then Garry told a duck call joke. You should have been there George, Clark, Jane, Marc, Don, Don, Irv, , and Judge Joe. ** Mark is also passionate about PASS IT ON, a spin off from Big Brothers Big Sisters, that provides outdoor mentors. Check out outdoormentors.org He spoke about this generation of kids are the most obese yet because they just don’t spend time outdoors…just being creative. In fact it is predicted that this is the first generation that kids are not expected to outlive their parents! TV, video games, and the computer are keeping them inside. One time he took a young 12 year old from Wichita on a trap-shooting excursion. The boy said that this was the first time that he had EVER been on a dirt road! He regularly takes 10 to 15 kids deer hunting at Ted Turner’s Ranch near Medicine Lodge. Mike is always recruiting mentors that like the outdoors. He talked about the book Last Child in the Woods, and it’s premise; Todays youth have a Nature deficit disorder. Thanks Garry for bringing Mike to us.
All of our times are good times, if only we know what to do with them. PAUL HARVEY
November 4, 2009

THE MEETING
President Tom led with the blessing (especially for Jay’s eye exam), and led the Flag Salute. *We enjoyed the new table arrangement, and some folks tried sitting in the same place where they felt comfortable. Tom suggested that we always try to sit with new members to get to know them (not all at once though). *Then our president had us say I feel happy-I feel healthy-I feel terrific, then yell I FEEL HAPPY-I FEEL HEALTHY-I FEEL TERRIFIC! *JD an dthe news of the day: great weather for 5 days ahead, Kelly Parks is talking to the FBI, a baby was born in QuikTrip’s parking lot, Kellogg at Rock opens today, George Strait (someone said ‘who’s that?’) and Reba are coming to Intrust Arena, and finally City council members will have their own parking spots at the arena. *But Martina is coming to Hartman Arena in December! *Toms’ education for us: Humans might not be faster, but they can run longer than animals. On this date in 1980 Ronald Reagan was elected President, and 28 years later B. Obama was also. On this date in 1939 Packard had the first AC. *Dwayne Shannon reminded us of the CIS Reality Fair on November 12-13, AND guaranteed 70’s weather while we are ringing the bell Dec 5 AND Dec 12! *Clark Owens thought he was missing our birthday song for him [the 7th], by not attending. *Tom noted that Optimist clubs are popping up all over the world. He said If your ship doesn’t come in---swim out to it! *We are looking for a capable Optimist to be a leader for our Oratorical contest. Bev Hodge at Robinson has left us, and Molly Lavicek is anxious to have her student enter. *Gaye reported a good Optimist turnout for our annual JRF Halloween party. 18 young people enjoyed real Trick or Treating, and Joe Voss told his story. Who wants to be Santa at JRF Christmas party? *Floyd reminded us that on November 10 the Junior ROTC will be saluting Veterans Day at Century II. +Helen James won the $10 Kroger gift certificate. We could tell that Floyd in in his element as Sgt-at-Arms.

Mike Berry forgot to introduce himself as the program, just got right into it. Being a true Arky for 6 months, then a few years in Oregon, the family moved back to Kansas. Mike’s great grandfather, Charles Wellington Berry was born in Canada (or was it New Hampshire?) in 1826, but when he was 14 years old he homesteaded in Wheaton, Ks. Mike’s father gave Mike the job of family historian, and Mike took it seriously and went to the County seat for research. He found that his great grandmother, Emma May Noe was born in 1872 in Leavenworth. The farm census of 1875 also noted that Charles had a half brother. Grandfather Levi was widowed 6 times, and his 6th wife had Hiram (cared for by great grandmom). I understood that Charles had 11 children (his wife passed during the 12th childbirth. Well, the main theme of Mike’s presentation was that the Berrys were hard working, adaptable very involved people. Mike learned to be helpful and understanding, and he was chosen to be the instructor for City Church’s Sunday night meetings with young folk from the Afton Boys Ranch. They usually have from 14 to 21 kids, because the guard to boys ratio is 7 to 1. He always shakes every boys hand upon arriving and departing the meeting. He sees very positive results, and finds his efforts are very rewarding.
Tom asks the difference between a craftsman and a carpenter. When a craftsman makes a mistake he fixes it even better.

John Browning, one year ago today after 32 years with New York Life put away his shingle, and turned over his practice to Mark Keene, his speaker. Mark was president of the National Association of Insurance Advisors 2 years after John. Mark is now president of Keene Financial Strategies. Speaking fast {our president forgot we had a speaker---I think}, Mark enthusiastically covered a multitude of topics from religion to politics. His topic being: ARE YOU READY? For the rest of your life, any regrets, and what are you doing about it? No excuses! We were all born selfish, deceitful, and foolish, and it is the parents job to teach us to be different. He talked about Daniel who prayed 3 times a day, and he enlisted his buddies to pray and serve. A lot of knowledge in the room, are we giving back…mentoring. In planning your future: 1. Define the problem 2. Define the core value that is broken 3. Decide if you can fix it without breaking any more 4. Select someone who will help you with 1.2.3. Remember health insurance is a right? Oops, sorry. Don’t vote red team or blue team. Don’t vote incumbents Vote term limits Read Proverbs 17-18 and 22-7. And lastly THIS IS a Christian Country! Lance was listening closely to every word.

The good doctor looked frustrated as he couldn’t find a dollar amongst the fifties and hundreds.
THE PROGRAM
F.O. said that it all has been previously said, and Dr David Farnsworth needed no introduction…so he didn’t. Dr. Farnsworth turned 80 in February and has so much information in his head that I couldn’t keep up. He taught at the Air War College only to Colonels and Lt. Colonels, during his long stint at WSU. Rambling from the Eiffel Tower to the second tier of International problems, he focused (if I could really say ‘focused’) on Latin America. Actually he addressed our changing military, and how we don’t need aircraft carriers (just destroyers), missile or B-ones anymore. The U.S. has designed a new fighter plane since 1990. No more USSR, which is now 15 countries, actually India 1/3 the size will have a larger population than Russia by 2025. How many countries in Africa? Of the world’s 192 countries, Africa has 53 of them. Columbia is standing in the way of nine nations trying to organize, but Bolivia and Ecuador are sympathetic to us. He couldn’t understand why Rio was chosen for the big event, relating to the danger for tourists. Israel has between2 and 300 warheads to protect itself. China, though a Communist government, has an economy that trades with the West. Dr Farnswoth jumped around even more, and I was fascinated and missed some points, maybe all.
Note: People don’t dare big things for small rewards. Paul Harvey

Weather will be the same 2. H1N1 vaccine has arrived in Wichita 3. In Kansas City a 62 year old man has two wives………..both living in the same apartment complex. {different floors, I presume}. *President Tom relayed long time member Bob Bundy’s resignation. Maybe we should investigate why? Also Garry told of Extra long time, and former member Walt Byfield’s passing after a long battle with Cancer. I CAN COUNT 29 FORMER MEMBERS LIVING IN WICHITA! WHY ARE THEY NOT MEMBERS ANYMORE? I THINK IT IS TIME FOR A REUNION MEETING, AND IT WILL BE BROUGHT UP AT THE BOARD MEETING. Lance, an avid KU fan, is married to Kelly (Linda Hoobler is her mom), and he is in the investment/brokerage business. And coincidentally his birthday was today. We sang to him! *For some listed reason, Tom said it is easier to become an Optimist or optimist when you are older. *’Pete’ had honest JD draw Dwayne’s number for the gift certificate.
THE PROGRAM
Timely Judge Joe introduced Kristina Helmer from the Sedgwick County Health Department’s Education branch to talk specifically about the H1N1 Flu and Vaccine. Judge Joe did say that one of our Asst. DA’s, Jason Lane almost died from this virus just a couple weeks ago. After Kristina told us that very few folks over 64 are in danger, I didn’t hear anything else. Just kidding. The Education Department even sent a photographer to take pictures of Kristina’s presentation. The virus was first discovered April 23rd in Mexico, on April 25th it arrived in Kansas, and May 6th was discovered in Sedgwick County. It especially affects those under 25 years old, and is now in every State AND every country. She did mention that 70% of those with the virus had pre-existing conditions. Fever, coughing, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue are symptoms to be concerned about. When asked how it is different from ‘just the Flu’, the answer was unclear, maybe more vomiting. It is spread by human contact, coughing, ect. Wash hands often, avoid touching eyes, nose mouth. Definitely stay home if you are sick! There are limited quantities of the vaccine, and each Friday we find out how much is available. There is a priority list for those to receive the vaccine, and Kristina did hand out Pandemic Influenza Guide pamphlets. Thanks to Joe and Kristina for relieving our minds.
Historically, whenever any nation has taxed its people more than 25% of their national income, initiative was destroyed and that nation was headed for economic eclipse. Paul Harvey

THE MEETING
The meeting began on a positive note as Marc Kaplan presented us with a generic thank you blessing before we breakfast was served. Our Flag Salute followed. *Joe Voss introduced his wife Connie *Gaye passed out Central Plains Rodeo Association programs for the Royalty Pageant last weekend, and they even had the Optimist Creed on the back. Did you know that Amanda (Gaye’s daughter) was the FIRST Rodeo Queen? We were pulling for Krissie May to be Little Miss, and she just missed coming in second. *Helen told us more history about the Vulcan in Birmingham. Helen’s great grandpappy was a champion fiddler at the 1904 World’s Fair in St Louis where the Vulcan was on display. We enjoyed Helen showing us a picture of her great grandfather playing the fiddle in the mouth of a whale (a dead one). She is looking forward to visiting Birmingham to see the Vulcan as he did back in 1904! *Lt Governor Don Kirkland related his experience installing officers for the West Club. *Dwayne Shannon reminded us of one of those experiences to savor. CIS is conducting Reality University at North High School October 22-23. We all should be volunteering to help, and to learn about what teenagers are thinking today. Call 973 5110 to volunteer. Other Reality Fairs this year are South High November 12-13, and West High December 10-11. *Debbie Kirkland attended this meeting for the fellowship AND to show us some pictures of their grandson. Chuck says we some representation at the district meeting in KC this weekend. Tom should go, and Don will be there because Lt Governors need to go to make a report. It’s Saturday at the Ramada at 69th and Shawnee Mission Parkway. *The JD news brief was brief! Rain tonight, and Starky is adding on. George explained that you must have a medical diagnosis to be admitted in the Dementia program. Francis wanted to know if we could get in as a group. Sgt at Arms Don had Jay draw, guess who for the third week in a row, Don Kirkland for the giant box of Sees Chocolates provided by Joe Voss.
THE PROGRAM
Before Joe introduced the program someone finding green army soldiers in her coffee, and the young boy said he made it just like he heard ‘soldiers in you cup’! Joe introduced Kristi Oberg by saying She knows what she is going to say, but not what you are going to hear! Kristi, the Development Director for the Kansas Humane Society, is a sixth generation Wichitan, and has one dog and seven cats. Attended Heights High School and WSU. Way back in 1888 the Society began, and was mainly for the care of horses, and that makes it one of the oldest non-profits in Wichita. The brand new Murfin Animal Care Campus is 40,000 square feet, and their main function is to protect animals from people, where the City’s main function is to protect people from animals. In 2008 28,000 animals were brought into the campus. She emphasized that they spay and neuter all animals because one dog can add 64,000 puppies to the population (over time and many generations of course). They also are teaching kids about the importance of ‘fixing’ dogs and cats. How about fixing skunks and possums? Their budget is 3.2 million dollars, and they raised $200,000 at Woofstock! They do microchip all pets to keep track of them. Adoption fees are $95 for cats and $135 for dogs. Many questions from Jay (a vet delivered her), Joe B, Gaye, Dick, Paul, and Joe L, Thank you Joe and Kristi for this informative program.
